Tower Hamlets Council refused the Brick Lane data centre unanimously. Nine resident groups opposed it. The council and the mayor asked for housing instead.
The government approved it anyway, through ministerial recovery, with the letter signed on behalf of Angela Rayner. The scheme offers 44 homes, six of them for social rent, and a data centre built around high-frequency trading.
Rayner's partner, Sam Tarry, has been senior adviser since May at NorthPoint Strategy, a lobby firm whose sectors include AI, crypto and energy.
Its chair is Tory peer Lord Wharton. Its crypto council lists Andreessen Horowitz among its clients. NorthPoint says Tarry helps clients "shape policy agendas".
The minister who decides where data centres go shares a household with the adviser to the industry that needs them. 🧵

Your weekend reminder that Nigel Farage wants to
- leave the ECHR
- repeal the Equality Act
- Strip back workers rights
- Lift restrictions on exploitative zero-hours contracts
- repeal the Renters’ Rights Act which abolishes “no fault evictions”
He is not on your side
Nigel Farage and Reform UK want to
- leave the European Convention on Human Rights which protects our right to protest, our right to privacy, our right to fair trials and so much more
- repeal the Equality Act - a key piece of legislation that prevents against discrimination in Britain
- Strip back workers rights
- Lift restrictions on exploitative zero-hours contracts and Legalize "fire and rehire" tactics
- repeal the Renters’ Rights Act which abolishes “no fault evictions” that allow landlords to remove tenants without giving a reason and introduces new duties over health hazards
and to sell all this to the country Farage offers nothing in return but grievance and division. PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR IT.
That anyone could be supporting Farage and Reform with these policies must surely be a damning indictment of UK media in failing to explain all this to the public

I am angry tonight.
Because today ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car.
ICE makes this city less safe.
We want them out. Now.

Isn’t it strange how, when you start being paid by private companies instead of elected by the public, the people become the “mob”?
Palantir’s record deserves scrutiny – from politicians and the public.

NEW: The big new Aaron Sorkin film The Social Reckoning opens tomorrow with a plot centred on Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen....but we need to talk about *another* Facebook whistleblower, Sarah Wynn-Williams. And why Zuck is gunning for her..

My solidarity with everyone joining the protests today to kick Palantir out of our NHS.
As I said in Parliament recently: from serious concerns over its handling of patient data to its human rights record, this US tech giant should have no role in our NHS.

Honoured and Humbled to be given a load of dodgy crypto cash from a convicted money launderer.
I am honoured and humbled that Ben Delo has shown such confidence in Reform.
Ben knows that we are the only party that can turn the country around and reverse Britain’s rapid decline.

This is the scale of the challenge this government is facing.
We must never forget what the Conservatives did to the NHS.

A dark blizzard of disinformation is warping the public’s perception of our great city.
But we know the truth: our homicide rate is lower than that of every major US city and leading European cities, including Berlin, Brussels, Milan and Paris. Neighbourhood crime is down, and we’ve been ranked the #1 city in the world for 11 years in a row.
The facts tell a very different story ⬇️

Another hit for Russian backed candidate Mr Farage. A real newspaper might have devoted a front page or two to his five million quid “gift for security” (sic) Amazing what can happen when the son of a KGB agent owns a paper and Thailand crypto billionaire gives money to burn

At what point do we stop pretending our newspapers are ‘news’ and start calling them what they are…
Promotional pamphlets for the billionaires who own them and the agendas they’re selling.

Brilliant, brilliant exposé by Alex Thomson @alextomo on @Channel4News last night, blowing the lid of the corrupt, and it is corruption of the @EnvAgency allowing water companies to walk away from criminal charges, jail time, unlimited fines and all for nothing more than a slap on the wrist and some blood money paid to local charities.
It's time to put an end to this nonsense, it's time to hold people to account, it's time to send the fat cats to jail.

The UK govt is Palantir’s 2nd biggest customer.
Why? Or, more to the point, how?
Our latest @thenerve_news investigation reveals a web of cronyism into the highest levels of govt.
But Palantir also has a spin machine that uses political journalists to launder its PR

NEW: Palantir’s revolving door.
A new investigation by @thenerve_news has found Palantir has recruited more than 30 senior officials from UK govt, a strategy transparency experts say poses an ‘acute risk’ of corruption.

Being the parent of a SEND daughter, my heart goes out to parents who must be so distressed by the leaks about SEND reforms
The idea of pushing more on to struggling schools/teachers is not the answer. So many waiting with bated breath to read what's published on Monday
Unless politicians change their mindset to investing in children so they can be the best they can be/contributing adults - lifetime costs, in ever way, will continue to rise

A ridiculously reductionist mentality. Not everything can be determined by direct numerical relationship. Lower wage earners may not be net tax contributors but are essential to society; ergo they contribute. As for the arts, these should not be just for rich kids.

Actually I think these people should be facing jail time - a fine that they probably can't or won’t pay, for this horrendous abuse, not just of our countryside but of the law. This punishment does not fit the crime.

There must be a full independent inquiry into exactly what the Royal Family knew about Andrew.
This must include:
▪️ Who knew what and when?
▪️ Full disclosure of all relevant Royal documents
▪️Which Royals helped pay the £12m settlement in Virginia Giuffre’s sexual abuse case

Can anyone explain?
If Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is being investigated by the police for misconduct in public office, why is Peter Mandelson not being arrested/investigated for what appears to be identical offences?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There is in fact an ongoing police investigation into Peter Mandelson's alleged misconduct in public office.
