I’m actually pretty upset Apple allowed this. While the feature is cool, the technical functionality that enables it is not cool.
If I was Tim Apple, OAI would be temporarily banned from the App Store until this is reversed, and here’s why:
I use iMessage because it’s quantum encrypted, with server keys I can own. Local caches are on devices that are encrypted with my passwords, not apples keys.
This makes it and computationally and legally impossible for anyone else to access chat history but the people I trust and directly communicated with.
But *now* the copies of my messages from years ago on *anyones* laptop in what is *supposed* to be an encrypted-at-rest local cache only can now be fetched directly by chatgpt without my permission or even knowledge and stored and processed in plain text forever on openai / Microsoft servers unencrypted and requested by any government entity at a moments notice without my knowledge and openai/Microsoft legally have to provide that, in federally enforced total secrecy. And they’re never legally allowed to admit they do it.
AND because of default chatgpt settings most people haven’t bothered to turn off, all those private texts can now be used for training and will end up in the weights of future models, so all future AI models will permanently know all of our private lives as a part of the weights, immortalized forever as training checkpoints.
Total architecture abandonment and user trust betrayal on Apples part. This should be the most viral story of 2026 by 100x. The permanent end of private communication in the US.

In 2014 we published the first large-scale study of suicidality in autism, subsequently widely replicated, revealing that 1 in 4 autistic people have planned or attempted suicide. That’s why I’m very concerned about the impact of the media coverage on Professor Jason Arday who is autistic. He has been accused of plagiarism and he was cleared of any academic misconduct following a rigorous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University. And yet he continues to be systematically discredited over every detail of his life, daily. We should of course always investigate plagiarism to protect academic standards. However, I cannot stand by and watch when an autistic man is on the ground and the kicking continues. This is relentless bullying of a vulnerable autistic man and raises safe-guarding issues. It’s time to stop.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Despite university clearance, Arday's PhD thesis contains dozens of near-verbatim unattributed passages from prior works, and a journal corrected his paper for missing citations to adapted text including participant quotes. retractionwatch.com/2026/07/27/cam… mdpi.com/2076-0760/12/1…

Suicide is highly contagious. It triggers copycat deaths across both time & space. Especially if reported sensationally.
Please share these guidelines from the Samaritans on how to responsibly report on suicide. They apply also to social media.
Young people are particularly vulnerable.
RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by so many including the media. Please don’t let this awful awful tragedy lead to more tragedy.

It really helps to have context: no electricity and a concern about eyesight. It’s possible to be concerned about privacy, acknowledge the benefits of social media, and to design a solution in partnership with kids, parents, school and wider communities so that the much-needed nuance is considered in any legislation.

Booking systems and fees introduced in public pools, in the name of funding needs and safety, have quietly redesigned who our pools and ponds are for. The effect is exclusion, whatever the intent, and it falls hardest on working-class families and their kids. New article linked below.
“We build thresholds around powerful things because power requires judgment, and judgment can’t be downloaded or installed. Before a person asks a machine to write for them, they should know what it feels like to write from the depths of their own uncertainty and identity. Before a person lets a machine imitate their voice, they should have endured the long, uneven, often humiliating process of acquiring one.” nytimes.com/2026/07/27/opini…

What some mainstream, non-technical journalists don’t seem to have quite grasped yet is that the era of AI naturally leads to “Sovereign AI” which therefore becomes an issue of national security, fundamental infrastructure and a source of economic growth. (And I’m not just talking about LLMs). It’s doubtful if Burnham’s “Cabinet Minister for AI” appointment will have the heft to address these huge issues on their own without a full department, and DSIT appears to be for the chop. This is the major concern of most in the tech industry, and it’s not a self-serving position - it’s an issue of national importance.
Something tells me that science and tech will somehow survive in Britain without a government department to its name. theguardian.com/politics/202…
Hope @andyburnham’s team will read this letter, alongside the words of our Cambridgeshire science leaders, our pioneering AI leaders, and the words of co-founder of GDS, Tom Loosemore. None of this makes sense for the UK right now. Moving the deckchairs doesn’t drive growth or better local outcomes.
In recent days, there have been strong rumours that the new administration will abolish @SciTechgovuk and scatter tech across Whitehall.
We've written to Andy Burnham with @techUK to say this is the wrong move at the wrong time.

Great to see @demishassabis engaging so deeply and publicly on hard and important questions around AI governance. I am hopeful that the @AISecurityInst can contribute institutional capacity in this area
Maternity care in the UK has failed too many for too long. I hope that the government will take meaningful, immediate action despite their in-house disputes. The lives of mothers and babies require your urgent focus, not politicking. Listen to the families and do something.
Hundreds of mothers and babies died or were harmed due to "systemic failures", Nottingham maternity review finds bbc.in/4eJShla

We’re excited to introduce Taste Labs.
Our mission is to end AI slop. We’re building the data and infrastructure layer to give AI models and agents taste.
And today we’re coming out of stealth, announcing our $18.5M seed funding, co-led by @CRV and @AmplifyPartners
AI has nailed objective domains and made it easy to generate anything. But it still feels off. Now, the challenge is judgement. What fits, what feels like you, what’s GREAT. This requires turning a fuzzy, subjective domain into something we can measure and codify. We’re starting with design.
There are two sides to cracking this, the foundation model layer and the agent layer:
- We’ve already been working with the top frontier labs to evaluate and improve their models, crafting the right post-training data and RL environments.
- We’ve also been working with app-layer companies to build the context and verification tools for their agents to produce better, more on-brand, more creative outputs.
We want a future where AI feels right.
If you’re passionate about this mission, join us!
