Just published my first review paper on cooperative robotic additive manufacturing, main focus was trying to capture the most recent developments in toolpath planning, motion planning, sensing and digital twins

The first college ME program which requires machining in the first semester, or better yet as a HS prerequisite, will be the leaders of the next decade

To think right now is the hardest it will be to reverse engineer all software (and lots of hardware). Hopefully someone is working on a version of solidworks that doesn't crash and opens new part versions
AI HACKERS HAVE PUT SKATEBOARDING IN CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE 2! 🚨 THIS HAS GONE TOO FAR. ITS TIME TO PACE THE FRONTIER. @DarioAmodei @sama @elonmusk @theo

The exclusion of a pinky was decided after the CTO asked people to tape their pinky and not use it for a day. Not sure if that was the best way to make that decision
These new hands are the perfect companion for Atlas. With 13 degrees of freedom, they are directly actuated, built for high fidelity simulation to enable sim-to-real RL, and designed from the ground up for dexterous physical work. I can think of countless ways a pinky is helpful in blue collar work from personal experience and I doubt that's what they were doing on their single day. Perhaps they don't plan on their robots needing to do that kind of work but seems like a short sighted heuristic

The amount of em dash and AI figure slop being published is disheartening. It probably won't matter anyways, the paper summaries will still look the same

New England + Midwest density is insane for true hardware enjoyers
Based on 19,959 machine shops, here's where we build stuff in the US. Midwest - 12,339 - 31% South - 10,471 - 26% East - 7,622 - 19% West - 6,766 - 17% Other - 2,802

Where and who will build these? I would be shocked if these are actually built in 2028
🚨COMING SOON: NUCLEAR-POWERED CARGO SHIPS 🚨 @USDOT is working to fast-track construction of a new fleet of vessels to change the game and DOMINATE China  THAT MEANS: 📦 MORE CARGO (no internal fuel tanks) 🚢 FASTER SHIPS (up to 75% faster crossings) 🌐 ZERO EMISSIONS (20 years of continuous power without refueling) The first NUCLEAR-POWERED vessel is set to be built in 2028 🇺🇸

If you are an engineer and have not visited the Hoover Dam this is your sign to go
Not only are ALL the hydro plants in America spinning at exactly 60 Hz (exactly 3,600 / min). They are ALSO synchronized. The spinning turbines at the Hoover Dam and the turbines at Grand Coulee Dam are synchronized like clockwork gears, but 853 miles apart.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Hydroelectric generators produce 60 Hz AC but rotate at various speeds (e.g., 180 rpm at Hoover Dam, 200 rpm at Grand Coulee), not 3600 rpm. Not all US hydro plants are synchronized, as they operate in separate grid interconnections. powermotiontech.com/hydraulics/acc… andritz.com/hydro-en/hydro… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Ame…

I love the part of self driving taxis where they charge you 3x to take you to one of 5 useful locations

An interesting sign of the changing times that are coming to academia and higher education. Academia, like the patent system and many others, was built for a landscape that no longer exists and needs to be reformed direly
Today, roughly the same amount of basic research is done in industry as in academia. It’s time our doctoral training reflected that. @NSF is launching a first-of-its-kind 4-year PhD program at more than 30 universities. Students will spend a year+ embedded with industry partners doing research that informs their dissertation.

Engineers receive too much hate for the removal of bench seats when it was obviously a karen middle management decision

Imagine paying Toyota 30k for a vehicle that they then hold hostage for 2 months because the recall part which bricked it in your driveway doesn't exist #clowned
