Just over a year after @georgejoseph94 & I published the 1st story in a series on how predatory investors target heirs of property in gentrifying NYC neighborhoods, the state made changes to the law to better protect those homeowners.
It's now in effect!

Meet the man who lives next door to his parents, makes lo-fi indie rock music in his spare time and spreads a gospel of anti-development around the city.
Housing policy experts say he's peddling “zoning Flat Earther material.”

Haven't tweeted in a while but popping up to say... I'm now covering housing + development (in addition to climate + resiliency).
That looks like this story, plus others to come about where and how we're [not] building in NYC.
Send Qs and ideas!
Incredible shrinking affordable housing at Google HQ. In 2015 @BilldeBlasio & @coreyinnyc promised 1,600 apartments, 500 affordable.
The housing is finally coming online: 305 apartments total, 175 affordable. @sssmaldo on how the rest vanished.

As city officials urged New Yorkers to stay home in pummeling rains, migrants whose 60-days had run out were still forced out of a Bushwick shelter, just the same.
"Give us until the morning. But no...We were here for 2 months, why not one more night?”

.@NYCMayor and his admin was caught flat-footed during today's massive rainstorm and faced a deluge of criticism as schools, homes, subways, and roads flooded - but the mayor tipped his hypothetical hat to his team thecity.nyc/2023/9/29/238963…

A source raised the idea of "Climate Change Days," which are like the new snow days. You stay home!
Have you taken one for rain, flooding, smoke or anything else this year?
This still holds up as a primer on why things are so badly flooded in this downpour

I've reported on NJ for 10 yrs but never spent time w/ farmworkers, mostly migrants, who fuel the state's $1B agriculture biz. My last dispatch for the NJ desk: a deep dive w/ @MSolDub into how climate change threatens worker health @WNYC @NJSpotlightNews gothamist.com/news/they-pick…
back from vacation and catching up... @GovKathyHochul last week signed a bill into law that mandates disclosure of flood risk when selling homes.
Previously, a seller could pay $500 to avoid disclosure.
