some more thoughts here… I think the first Long Walk was held in 1946 (assuming the events of the movie take place in ‘79), hence the vibe pictured below (1/6)
As the First Annual Long Walk comes to a close, the nation remembers ten of its most notable contestants… 10. Zachariah Mellow from Virginia 18th Place Mellow’s impressive show of stamina in walking twelve hours on bare feet cements his ranking in tenth place.

There were issues with spectators as well, mostly the Walkers’ families or girlfriends or some who just wanted to see them in person. The rule against spectators would come during the 4th Walk when one interfered and caused a walker’s death. (5/6)

The rations and packs they were issued were leftovers from the war effort. No one expected the walkers to break 200 miles, much less 300, especially in the Alabama heat. They ended up walking through towns that were not properly monitored for compliance. (6/6)

2. Shepard Horner from Nebraska 2nd Place The final two walkers were alone for an entire day, walking much further than anyone had predicted. Shepard saw his grandmother on the sidelines and ran to her, forsaking victory for a final embrace.

1. Ulysses Underwood II from Nevada Winner Underwood did not stop walking after Horner’s death, he had to be subdued by soldiers and spectators. Sources claim that he was chanting the walkers’ names to himself in the order of their death. He refused to relay his wish.
