Horrorigins

Among those who write about horror, and those who talk about it, a common question is what drew you into it.  The origin story of your fascination.  I read a book where the author posed t…

Puzzle Conscious

Those of us who write books are all working on putting together a puzzle.  Even though we often disagree, it is part of the same puzzle.  We’re trying to expand human knowledge.  Som…

Still Headless

I found J. W. Ocker through Poe.  Specifically, through his book Poe-Land.  I guess I read it last year about this time.  We had a brief email correspondence when I told him about my Sleepy Hollow …

October Puzzles

The holiday season should begin at Halloween.  In my mind, if I can make it to Halloween, I can make it through the rest of the year.  Besides, the holidays are the only time I allow myse…

Some years back I read Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and the two follow-up volumes.  My interest in them was reignited when I started seeing them being branded as …

October Challenge

There’s a popular October challenge—watch a horror movie every night of the month.  I’m neither a young person nor retired, so this is not something I’ve ever been able to do.  It’s been …

Picking on Poltergeist

It’s not nice to pick on the elderly, I know, but Poltergeist is one movie where I disagree with the critics.  One of my “old movies,” I saw it sometime back in the eighties and although there were…

Building Horror

Christina Henry grew a reputation rewriting fairy tales.  At least that’s how I found her.  I read The Girl in Red and then Horseman (which was after I’d begun work on Sleepy Hollow as American Myt…

Exorcising Emily

Perhaps after The Exorcist, the demonic possession movie cited with the greatest respect is The Exorcism of Emily Rose.  This 2005 movie is based, in part, on the true case of Anneliese Michel, a y…

Demeter at Last

Now that official scary movie season is here, and now that I’ve had a chance to watch The Last Voyage of the Demeter, well, I guess I can share my thoughts.  First of all, it immediately went into …

Sweet Horror Music

I don’t often write about music because it’s far too personal.  And very important to me.  I’m not a casual listener, for the most part.  When I listen to music I listen to music.  Still, sometimes…

Old Man Country

As a movie fan, you eventually come to trust certain filmmakers.  The Coen Brothers produce consistently good work.  I’d missed No Country for Old Men and was somewhat reluctant to see it.    Films…

Slip Sliding

The world is quiet here.  The Baudelaire orphans have been reunited by the end of The Slippery Slope, but Quigley Quagmire gets separated from them at the denouement.  As a friend of mine once said…

I’ve noted elsewhere that no database exists, that I know of, where every movie showing or featuring the Bible is catalogued.  I used clips from films that had the Bible in one of my Rutgers’ Jan T…
