❓ Could targeting T cell metabolism be the next big thing in boosting cancer immunotherapy?
➡️ New research shows tweaking how T cells use fat can change their survival and power.
➡️ In this study, @steinerkaylee, @JeffRathmell et. al found that a gene called MECR helps T cells get the energy they need to fight disease. Without MECR, T cells struggle to survive and do their job.
🌟 By understanding these metabolic pathways, we might find new ways to make cancer-fighting T cells even stronger! Exciting possibilities ahead! #Immunology #Immunotherapy #CancerResearch

Excited to officially share my thesis work on the @JeffRathmell lab has been published in the Journal of Immunology! Thank you to all our collaborators who helped along the way.

It is great when science can have direct impacts to patients and make connections and collaborate. I hope we can all find ways to relate our science to patients and improve outcomes more!
Beyond MEPAN: the role of MECR in immune metabolism. Thank you to Dr. KayLee Steiner for illuminating more about the importance of MECR and mtFAS to human health. @steinerkaylee

Big congratulations to @steinerkaylee for her PhD defense! As always, KayLee goes big--tackling a poorly understood metabolic pathway in T cells (mtFAS) and with a huge bottle to celebrate after.

Check out the latest drop from the @JeffRathmell lab by the extraordinary @DarrenHeintzman! This project was intellectually stimulating for all in the lab and fun to be a part of. See how temperature impacts T cell metabolism! science.org/doi/10.1126/scii…

As co-executive chair for the Cancer Biology Student Association, I organized our Cancer Biology retreat where we hosted @NCIDirector Dr. Kim Rathmell. Thank you to all our chairs to make this retreat a success and silent auction to benefit @GildasClubMidTN
Second and probably last SIS ✅ I was selected to give an oral presentation as an AAI young investigator out of over 200 abstracts!!
Excited to share that @DrARPatterson paper is out! I did my rotation with Andrew in @JeffRathmell lab and happy to have helped him with his experiments and projects.

Mitochondrial Fatty Acid Synthesis and Mecr Regulate CD4+ T Cell Function and Oxidative Metabolism biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #biorxiv_immuno
My first author paper from my thesis work has been uploaded to BioRxiv! We identified Mecr as important for T cell fitness in in vivo CRISPR screens. I have further worked with Mecr and am the first to show it regulates T cell function and metabolism.

It's out! @JackieEBader led our new @TheMarkFdn Endeavor team study showing obesity promotes PD-1 on macrophages to suppress anti-tumor immunity but sensitize to checkpoint therapy--a new mechanism of the cancer "obesity paradox" @VUMC_VCI @VUMC_Cancer

So happy to have helped Jackie with experiments for her paper now published in NATURE! 👩🏼🔬🎉
Cannot express how excited I am that our paper is finally out in real life!
Macrophages contribute to the obesity paradox. We found PD-1 acts directly on macrophages to alter metabolism and suppress their anti-tumor function in obesity associated cancers.
