Some of my American friends are ecstatic right now, some less so. Our mood is affected by external events, many of which we have little or no influence on. It is important to take some time regularly to reflect on your happiness or lack thereof.
You'll find that happiness comes from things and people close to you, while unhappiness sneaks into your life from the media you consume: AI is going to take your job! And kill you! But the world is not about to end.
Using AI at runtime comes with the hidden cost of non-determinism. That leads to all kinds of new work we are not used to in IT.
And lastly, there is an extra cost in compliance, where we have to convince our legal and compliance teams that our solution is and will remain compliant.
Are you good at allocating resources? That's a quintessential leadership challenge, and it's hard in an IT organization because we don't have good measures.
Measuring time didn't work. It just led to presenteeism. Measuring LOC didn't work. It just led to bloated code. Measuring token usage doesn't work. It just leads to tokenmaxxing. Those are input measurements, but you need to measure output.
The dopamine hit from discarding something is as good as the one you got from buying it. And you'll find that having one item less increases your energy and happiness. One more item quickly turns into clutter and subtracts happiness.
There are two kinds of systems that work well in an AI world: those that participate and those that don’t. The problem is that most systems fall somewhere in between.
If you want AI to access your systems on behalf of users, for example, if you are selling something, make sure you offer an MCP server, a well-documented API or structured product data. The new open-source tool Scope from Microsoft is one way to check.
What does the After Action Report after last week's PHP incidents show? I like the term “After Action Report” (AAR) better than “postmortem.” Many organizations only do postmortems when something went down.
The format is: 1. What was supposed to happen 2. What actually happened 3. If there is a gap, why? 4. What should be sustained or changed?
