Random experiment this morning. I think that calling someone a f**king r**ard is about as abusive as it is possible to be. Extremely personal & directed, plus propogating history of mental abuse & degrading language. I checked X's rules then reported four cases. All dismissed 🤔

No doubt that eDNA is a valuable tool but keep in mind it is an evolving technology. Fascinating FWBON webinar today with Laura Käse of Copenhagen University looking at what lives in the famous jars of Laos. Unique #freshwater habitats. Everyone home to surprises.

1st time writing for @ccmagazineindia on mahseers. Where best to start? Well the largest & most threatened, of course. Hump-backed mahseer Tor remadevii as centrepiece of conservation planning & historical background 👇🏼 currentconservation.org/firs… #RiversFishPeople #MightiestMahseer

Under the jacaranda tree outside our house, it was 39° in the shade yesterday. This little guy was there all day, including when the full sun was on him. I assumed he must be dead but this morning he was gone 🤔 Think he was a rhinoceros beetle #Beetle #Escarabajo

Modern drainage engineering is designed to move water off the land as fast as possible. Traditional land management did the opposite — and the difference matters. 💧 Britain has its own deep tradition of working with water rather than against it: the floated water meadows of Wiltshire and Hampshire, the rhynes of the Somerset Levels, mill leats, medieval ridge-and-furrow drainage, and the chalk streams of southern England — among the rarest freshwater habitats on Earth, with around 85% of the world's chalk streams found here. All of these systems share the same logic: slow the water, spread it, let the landscape absorb it. Concrete drainage does the reverse — channels, seals, accelerates, and expels water in a straight line. In urban and heavily paved catchments, a heavy downpour can become a destructive flash flood within minutes. The difference shows in the wildlife, too. A concrete culvert supports almost nothing. A stream with natural banks, emergent vegetation, stone riffles, and quiet pools supports common frogs, dragonflies, brown trout, water voles, kingfishers, and where populations have recovered, otters. The "nature-based solutions" now promoted by the Environment Agency and Natural England are not new ideas — they are the rediscovery of what generations of British farmers and land managers already understood. Slow, don't expel. Infiltrate, don't channel. Retain, don't drain. 🌿🐸 #WaterManagement #Rewilding #ChalkStreams #NatureBasedSolutions

"not just rocks, they are unique evolutionary laboratories." Says @PabloSinovas in @guardianeco of limestone karst in Cambodia. So many places being destroyed or invaded before we know what lives there. Time to up the discovery & conservation game 🕵🏼‍♂️ theguardian.com/environment/…

Collect rainwater, sounds so simple. Of course there are other steps needed to create systematic & better use of water. @throbbingmind writes for @guardian about success of @kalpana_designs & @rainwater_info projects in Hyderabad. #WaterSecurity #LetRiversFlow #RiversFishPeople

Looks like the possibility of me going to Yunnan to look at the mahseers there just got a little easier 🎉 #RiversFishPeople #TigerOfTheRiver

Close to where I live in Spain, local authorities are planning a new approach for dealing with extreme rainfall events. The landscape will be allowed to flood 🤔 #MakeRoomForRivers #LetRiversFlow share.google/SDdGeN3qnx45ILS…

Timely to celebrate Republic Day by reflecting on one of India's most important sources of natural wealth: her rivers. #RiversFishPeople #LetRiversFlow #MakePollutersPay
🇮🇳 On this #RepublicDay, as India honours its rivers and water heritage, the moment invites reflection on how hydro-ecology has shaped our civilisation, sustains unique species, & supports livelihoods. Our recent report, highlights best practices from across the country, using bioregional mapping to show how rivers underpin habitats, cultures & long-term water security and why striving for Right to ecological flows/Aviral Dhara is important for India’s well-being. 🔗 tinyurl.com/yvvzm9ee @theidlethinker @namrata_kabra @NITIAayog @PIBWater @MoJSDDWS @jaljeevan_ @cleanganganmcg @CGWB_CHQ @NIUA_India @bioregionalism @DialogueEarth_ @Indian_Rivers @thebetterindia @mirzalibra10 @lipi_meh @ranjanpanda @stevenlockett

Time for @ICC to follow precedent. When India asks for their games to be moved, whole tournaments are rescheduled. #T20WorldCup2026

For the first time, author of The Tiger of the River Aidy Pinder reads the whole book for a recording. Questions from Mansee on behalf of @WforWFoundation. Have a watch & listen, then tell your friends about Matisha & the growing success that is We4Water. youtube.com/live/v_S4ec8Gxf0…

"Often the result is accurate. Usually it is convincing. It can also be garbage." My experience: @rafaelbehr has this the wrong way round. Every day I'm shocked at AI inaccuracy. Truly shocked by AI rubbish disguised as "help". facebook.com/share/p/17ta8zS… theguardian.com/commentisfre…

If only I could remember what Biju Kumar said to me to cause that reaction 🤔 #OneHealth approach for wetland monitoring was an eye-opener for me. Great to find new pathways, novel support across disciplines to improve freshwater research & then share the results. #TellTheStory

The Ukraine "peace plan" is quite an eye-opener. Who would have thought that the USA would openly side with a repressive regime engaged in acts of aggression against NATO partners like the UK & Poland. No need to worry about Ukraine joining NATO, the USA just called time on it...
