Dangote visited Zimbabwe several times, exploring potential investment opportunities. However, once investors assess the operating environment, dollarisation exposes them to sovereign risk, expensive capital, high operating costs and policy uncertainty. Zimbabwe remains an unattractive investment destination for most international investors, with the notable exception of Chinese operators, who often arrive with their own equipment, supply chains and workforce.

📍🇳🇦 Aliko Dangote has broken ground on a new fuel depot in Walvis Bay, Namibia, as part of a US$2.5 billion project to make fuel distribution across the region more efficient. The project includes a 600-million-litre storage facility and a planned 1,700km pipeline across SADC. Dangote says it will be completed within 18–20 months. “We want to heavily invest so that most of the landlocked countries will be able to access petroleum products at a cheaper price”
Aliko Dangote speaks on his plans to build an oil pipeline network to supply fuel across Southern Africa. The plan includes a 240-million-barrel storage facility at Walvis Bay, Namibia. Fuel would then be moved through a 2,600 km pipeline network connecting Botswana, SA, Zim, Zambia and the DRC. The region’s limited fuel storage and pipeline infrastructure leaves many countries relying on trucks to move fuel. This adds to costs and transit times. Dangote’s plan is to invest in pipelines to lower those costs and help grow demand for his petroleum in SADC. In 2025, Dangote sold 158,000 tonnes of fuel to Southern Africa, compared with 4 million tonnes in West Africa.

Access Bank secures a foothold in Namibia. Dangote advances into our energy sector. Nigerian capital is making strategic moves. Coincidence, or a calculated play for Southern Africa?
