People seem excited about this. Idk, I think this is horrible. There is nothing poetic about coldly releasing hundreds of solutions to problems that could have been inspiring stories (e.g., Andrew Wiles). Using AI is fine; turning maths into a race won with concentrated resources is disgusting.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model.
We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results.

A student asked me about my habit of bike riding or walking in the forest as a way of gaining inspiration. I thought I'd share my response:
I suspect everyone is different but all of our brains need time to process information. Some of this happens in sleep -- the idea that if you have a hard problem that you should "sleep on it" is very true. I often wake up with an inspiration.
You need to give your brain time to do its thing. You can't control inspiration. All you can do is create opportunities for it to occur.
I often have ideas in a dark conference hall while half-listening to a boring talk. I'll have spent the day at posters and learning about new work. Sitting in the dark and letting my mind drift is when those fragments come together into something new.
I will often do some work early in the morning and hit a snag. Then I go for a bike ride in the forest. I am not intentionally thinking about my problem -- I'm in the moment. My body is moving in the world. But part of my brain must be working on the problem because within 15-20 minutes, I have the solution.
The brain is amazing. Cramming it with information all the time may feel productive. But feeding it information is very different from letting it be creative. You can't force it to be creative and if you are force feeding it, it can't be creative. You need to leave it alone. Let it wander. Let it make connections. Give it space. Trust it.

‼️ Hiring AI Safety Researchers ‼️
I am moving to Berlin to start a new research group on AI safety and societal impacts @HPI_DE. From September this year, I will be hiring fully funded PhDs, postdocs, and research interns.
My group will study the risks and benefits that emerge as we integrate highly capable AI systems into the social and political processes our societies depend on (e.g. communication, coordination, competition). We will measure these impacts through model evals, computational experiments, human studies, and develop technical mitigations. We will do important research that matters and have fun doing it.
Ideal candidates have a background somewhere between CS/NLP and the social sciences, are excited about working on AI in the current moment, and care deeply about making a positive impact through open research. If that sounds like you, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH using the form in the post below.
I am sad to be leaving @oiioxford and @AISecurityInst but will try my very best to bring the amazing energy of these places and their people to Germany. I am also very grateful to the DFG / Emmy Noether programme for funding my group for the next 6 (!) years.
Please spread the word, and I look forward to hearing from you 🤗

A new study led by @oiioxford has found that AI tools used to write, edit and contextualise social media posts can subtly steer public opinion - a form of influence that current regulation does not yet address.

Today NeurIPS is announcing our official satellite event in Paris.
After responding to the call from Ellis following the success of EurIPS in December, we are pleased to reach a new milestone by joining forces with the NeurIPS organizing committee for the 2026 edition!
Following the success of the EurIPS and NeurIPS-Mexico City pilots in 2025, we are thrilled to announce two official NeurIPS 2026 satellite events for this year!
These will be held in Paris, France and Atlanta, USA, respectively, running alongside the main venue in Sydney, Australia.
Both satellite events will feature keynotes, oral and poster presentations of accepted NeurIPS 2026 papers, as well as workshops. We are planning tutorials, affinity events, and other elements for the satellite sites and we'll share more information as planning advances.
Wherever you choose to join us, the entire NeurIPS organizing committee is working hard to deliver an outstanding experience for the whole community!

In my first year of my PhD, I measured progress by papers. The count was zero. I felt like an imposter with no sense of progress.
That was an illusion - I was measuring the wrong thing.
I see this happening frequently, so I wrote a post with what a learned.

Come and join us at @AmsterdamNLP! We have a postdoc position with @KatiaShutova in #NLProc, focusing on multilingual NLP, continual learning and LLM alignment. Looking for recent PhD graduates with an NLP/ML background and an interest in AI alignment. werkenbij.uva.nl/en/vacancie…

Check out our latest work arxiv.org/abs/2601.21839, where we show the way @OpenAI, @AnthropicAI and others charge users for using their reasoning models incentivize them to increase test-time computations even if they contribute little to the quality of the outputs.

Upon graduation, I paused to reflect on what my PhD had truly taught me. Was it just how to write papers, respond to brutal reviewer comments, and survive without much sleep? Or did it leave a deeper imprint on me — beyond the metrics and milestones? Turns out, it did.
A dissertation has its margins—blank spaces we don’t write in, but live through. That’s where the real transformation happens. This transformation is what I’ve tried to capture in a blog, "Margins of My Dissertation: Life Lessons My PhD Taught Me." It’s not necessarily a guide to academic success. It’s a personal account of what I really learned & carry with me for life.
In it, I ask & Answer : Are we forgetting the human behind the author? Can we be rigorous and still be kind? Would I recommend a PhD to those considering it? Read on to find out.
