In early 2022, the first “real” @modal user was using us for processing large scale weather data. We were anxious about going up to them and asking them to pay ~$500 for continuing to run these jobs. (We thought it was a lot!)
Obviously the numbers are much bigger now.
But we’ve also built so much more since then, and our velocity and ambition are growing even faster. This year, we figured out how to scale to millions of concurrent sandboxes, launch RDMA clusters securely and elastically for distributed training, train state of the art speculators for inference, build a whole new sandbox runtime, and more. So many great rabbit holes, and we’re going deeper down all of them.
If this sounds interesting to you, we’re hiring! modal.jobs
Today we're announcing that Modal has crossed $1B in annualized run rate, as well as raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, led by @Accel.
Since our Series C, usage has tripled and we’ve grown more than 15x year-over-year.
We are deeply grateful to the developers and companies building on Modal. There's still so much more to build, and we can't think of a better time to be building software.

Let’s goooooooo Katie!!
hello world! im so happy to announce that i’ve joined @modal!
when thinking about my next role post-VC, i prioritized the following:
+ a strong presence in NYC: modal and its NYC office are growing…FAST! i started yesterday and my desk has already been moved to accommodate more growth (lol)
+ talent density: even as an outside observer, the ambition at modal was abundantly clear - deep developer/customer love, a wide-reaching platform vision, an intense focus on cutting-edge research
+ a POV on brand: from its organic IC-led presence online to my conversations internally about everything from eng blog to socials to editorial projects, it was obvious that this is a team that deeply cares about how it shows up in the world
there has been quite a stir over the past few weeks (oops lol) of what “storytelling” and related work means in the world of tech... im excited to help shape what it means at modal :)

I hate gay guy Halloween what do you mean you’re the singing and dancing automated bird Molly from the Kelly Clarkson Brooklyn store controversy
very excited to have JD helping us at the Modal Creative Studio the next few months, helping expand and refine the next iteration of the Modal brand
since going freelance full time in february of 2025 my work has primarily taken 4 paths:
1) working directly with early stage startups on 0→1 brand identities
2) embedding into teams of companies a little further along (ramp, privy, intercom) and working to evolve/push their brands
3) subcontract brand identity work for agencies
4) specialized logo design work that doesn't touch the rest of the brand
what has been most interesting is seeing the ways that each of these work tracks inform one another.
working with companies that are a bit further along really informs how I build brands for startups: what elements will they actually need? how do brands get used on a day-to-day basis. what do they feel limited by?
and working with earlier companies also informs how I approach my work with more established companies: what elements of the brand are really working and are carrying the brand recognition/equity? what elements can we push on to make more interesting? how far can we push them where it will still feel true to the brand and its lineage, while also setting them up for what's next?
I talk about all of this here in my recent conversation with Jack Barber at Yet to Be:

we're on a generational run AND we have a opening for a staff brand designer fyi
