What's hilarious to me is that both Lewis & Tolkien had a reputation among their colleagues for wasting their time by writing stories about faeries and elves. Fellow professors who lacked the creative spark resented them for penning children's tales.

As a teenager Tolkien could recite Beowulf and Sir Gawain untranslated. He began each lecture by yelling, “Hwaet, we Gar-Dena!” He turned up at a playhouse in green robes and fake beard pretending to be Geoffrey Chaucer. He’s the patron saint of nerds.
