Dissent is not a threat to democracy. The inability to tolerate it is.

Watching horrifying scenes of protesters in Mumbai and Delhi being brutally manhandled by the police for doing nothing more than exercising their democratic right to protest. Male police officers dragging and beating young women. Shame on the government for their appalling mishandling of these protests. The response appears immature, egotistical and authoritarian. Democracy demands accountability, not intimidation. Peaceful dissent is a constitutional right, not a crime.

What is happening to our India? Democracy is not merely the right to vote. It is the right to question, dissent and disagree without fear. When dissent is met with intimidation, democracy itself is diminished. May Jantar Mantar never become anyone's Waterloo. May constitutional values prevail over political ambition, wisdom over confrontation, and peace over division. May good sense prevail. May peace be restored. Hey Ram. 🙏
