A lot of friends are texting me about roles at Etched today (not sure why) If you’ve never done hardware before, here are the roles for you:

remarkable that no one has built an autocomplete as good as "cursor tab" for google docs yet

very true old software products were often binary choices to users: "here is a service that does X. Either use it or don’t" new software products are now an infinite amt of choices to users: “here is an agent that can do X, Y, Z … things. either use it now, or later when the set of capabilities contains things you want” building agent capabilities rather than product features is a weird shift for engineering orgs. a particularly salient example is in consumer companies where data teams are the lifeblood of experimentation at scale (e.g. robinhood, netflix, uber, etc). a/b testing a finite amt of features is (relatively) easy. what does your data & experimentation platform look when there’s an infinite amt of agentic capabilities and product experiences being created? it's a great time to be a highly technical young engineer
There are so many seasoned software executives who are completely out of their element with the types of products that will breakout in the next few years. Over the last 20 years, their brains were wired to build apps that deliver value by outputting deterministic results, but AI produces value from probabilistic results. This is such a different way to approach how something should work. Young people who are thinking in this way from the outset will be at a significant advantage -- in the same way they were advantaged when thinking about how products could be social in 2010.

babe wake up, Etched doubled its valuation again
We've raised $700M at a $21B valuation from Jane Street, Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, A16Z, Peter Thiel, BCV, and Blackstone. We're also excited to share that we've shipped our first rack to Jane Street.

Just saw an early demo of what they're building. Can't wait to run it myself!

Can't believe they're selling shares of a $10T company for $10B!
We’ve raised $300M in Series C funding at a $10.3B valuation from Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Jane Street, Argo, and SK Hynix. Our mission is to run the world's inference. This round accelerates production of our inference clusters. We've opened an 80,000-sqft, 10-MW facility 15 minutes from our office to expedite production and prototyping.

Compute is the largest and most important market in the world. It's incredibly special for my two favorite companies @Kalshi @Etched to be trailblazing the future
Today, we launched GPU compute forward curves derived from our prediction market prices. Forward curves are now available on Nvidia B200. H200, and A100 chips. Forward curves track implied future prices. They are how mature commodity markets form expectations, allocate capital, and manage risk. Energy, interest rates/SOFR, FX, metals, and agricultural markets all rely on market-implied forward prices. Despite becoming one of the key inputs in the global economy, compute has lacked that market-derived infrastructure. Compute right now is where oil was before NYMEX — traded only via OTC deals, just like oil used to trade OTC between producers and refiners. As compute becomes as fundamental to the economy as energy, the industry will need a similar derivative market to promote efficient price discovery. Prediction markets are uniquely suited to this problem. Compute is not one uniform commodity and spans many chips, grades, tenors, locations, and contract structures. A live prediction market can aggregate those dispersed views into transparent prices that reflect market expectations for different maturities. The opportunity is big. Hyperscalers are spending over $700B on compute this year and the market is expected to grow to $7-10T by 2030. If this market behaves like traditional commodity markets, a liquid derivative market could be 10-20x bigger than the underlying spot market. Compute is still not uniform enough, but this is a step towards standardization as forward curves will help us see the rise and fall of different model prices and how they correlate. The forward curve is a first step. Up next: futures and perps.

Designed the new site for @Etched. Etched's hardware is making AI frontier models more efficient. A pleasure to work with their talented team on this one, working in close concert with @sumersao to bring this to life.

Congrats!! I was impressed to learn about some of the engineering wizardry (e.g. *very* low voltage domains, cluster scale memory, ...) that goes into tokens/watt maxxing of state of the art LLMs at interactive tokens/sec/user. Esp fun and memorable is the idea that this is engineering at the "opposite" regime to that of power transmission lines: very low voltage high current (at tiny distances) vs. very high voltage & low current (at great distances). Looking forward to more!

After spinning down my last company, I spent a few months exploring what I wanted to do next. I thought almost surely I'd be extremely burnt out, but I was surprised to find myself getting sucked into the exciting world of compute. I couldn't help but learn more about the technology, market dynamics, working capital cycles. Naturally, I spent more time w/ the Etched team as well as other AI chip companies in the space.

The more time I spent w/ the team, the more blown away I was. From the technical bets, to the quality of talent, to the work ethic and velocity, to the production ramps and exciting moment for the company I couldn't stay away from San Jose making multiple trips. It got to the point where it was a no brainer to join.

I'm so excited for this chapter and have had a blast working closely with @robertwachen and @UbertiGavin so far. There's so much more in store that I can't wait to share soon...

personal update: I joined Etched. I first met @robertwachen in early 2023 when I was a @neo scholar and he was a scholar finalist, one of my several interviewees. I still remember our first zoom. Within two minutes of meeting I knew Rob was not an ordinary 19 year old Harvard freshman. We hit it off I quickly gave him a strong yes on our internal rubrics. I never could have imagined what that serendipitous interaction would turn in to.
We're coming out of stealth. We've built our first racks after a successful A0 tapeout, $1B+ in customer contracts, and $800m raised. Early customer tests show us achieving SOTA throughput, latency, and power efficiency on inference workloads. Our first racks ship this summer.

Over the past few years, I was running my own startup, building something new in consumer AI backed by OpenAI, Khosla Ventures, and Google Ventures. Like any founder journey there were extremely high highs, and brutal lows. I was fortunate to have a strong support system around me, filled with legendary founders like Tarek from Kalshi, Aman from Cursor, and Rob. Although we never had too much time to hang out with each other building companies, I vividly remember the 2 am calls we'd share during especially critical moments giving each other council.
