Yale doctor Allen Steere investigates. 1977: Steere links the illness to tick exposure. Some patients remember a bite. Many don't. 1981: Willy Burgdorfer finds a spirochete (a type of bacteria) in deer ticks. However, those same ticks carry many other microbes. No human transmission study has ever been done. 1997: The bacterium's genome is sequenced. Research shifts toward sequencing and antibody testing. Antibodies also show up in people who never get sick. 2000s and onward: "Chronic Lyme" becomes an industry. Some practitioners attribute 70+ symptoms to Lyme and use alternative lab tests that "find" it in a large share of the people tested. Long-term antibiotics: Many integrative doctors put patients on long antibiotic courses, even though randomized controlled trials (2001, 2003, 2008, 2016) found no lasting benefit and found real harm. When patients get worse, it's blamed on another round of "Lyme" or other hidden infections, and the cycle continues."
