Hard to argue with Simon. Massive profiteering at the expense of the health & wellbeing of people. All driven by global events, not increased efficiency or performance.
The new energy price cap is now in force, with the UK’s exposure to volatile gas prices continuing to hit household bills. As energy firms post huge profits and households struggle, our film explains why people need lasting protection from unaffordable energy bills.

Will government listen and act on supplier warnings or is it just sleepwalking towards yet another energy driven social crisis. Consumer groups have been warning for months. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq0l…

Ofgem's price cap is rising today, but experts predict the worst is yet to come. All the while we stay hooked to volatile fossil fuel markets, UK households will be stuck with high energy bills, while energy giants take home billions in profit. (1/3)

66% of British adults say the government needs to do more to tackle energy costs, according to polling by @Moreincommon_ for the @jrf_uk. We’ve joined trade unions, think tanks and campaign groups, including @NEF, in signing a joint letter to the Chancellor, coordinated by @CostOfLivingAct, calling for energy support for all households alongside targeted help for those most in need. The upcoming Budget must deliver emergency energy support this winter, with extra help for those most at risk and action to write off crisis-era energy debts. Alongside immediate relief, we need lasting reform to break the link between gas and electricity prices and bring bills down for good. Read more: endfuelpoverty.org.uk/calls-…

At lunchtime I was on @BBCRadioScot. I was live from the wonderful Mitchell Library in #Glasgow, the sort of warm public space that far too many people might need this winter. #FuelPoverty #EnergyPriceCap

Ofgem muddying the waters by reducing its estimate for how much energy people consume. Because people can't afford it! However bottom line is higher costs. Elec and Gas prices up yet again and when consumption increases. Gas going up by 8%. 80% using gas to heat/cook.
Cornwall Insight's final price cap forecast for October is in, and bills are set to rise by 4%. On a unit for unit basis this takes them to their highest level since July 2023. Ongoing uncertainty around the US-Iran conflict has pushed wholesale gas prices for this winter to a near four-year high. European storage operators are struggling to refill stocks before the cold weather hits, and gas-in-store levels are sitting at historic lows for this time of year. A heatwave across Europe hasn't helped either, with air conditioning demand adding further pressure to gas needs for power generation. VAT is being cut from electricity bills from October, saving around £45 a year. But wholesale market swings are outweighing that saving, which is why bills are still heading up despite the cut. 🔷 Here is a figure breakdown: Under @ofgem new definition of a typical consumer, introduced in July 2026, the annual cap is expected to rise to £1,729 from the current £1,663. Under the previous definition the annual cap is expected to rise to £1,941, from the current £1,862. The amount a household pays depends on their usage, with these numbers reflecting Ofgem’s view of typical annual household energy demand. Per Unit Cost (p/kWh) Electricity: 26.57 Gas: 7.90 Standing Charge (£/per day) Electricity: 0.55 Gas 0.31 Read the full analysis: cornwall-insight.com/press-r…

Billions of profits for big oil, gas and electricity at the expense of the health & wellbeing of people, people that can no longer afford to heat or eat. Money flowing upwards to the already wealthy. It's not fair, it's not right.
While big business profits, far to many people are in a desperate position, saddled with unrepayable energy debt and unaffordably high energy costs. Time for fairness, time for changes that put people first.

💰️ It's profit season 💰️ Oil and gas giant Shell has today announced adjusted earnings of $9.8 billion (£7.34 billion) between April and June of this year alone. That means that Shell makes more profit in a single minute than most people in the UK earn in a year. In the time it would take you to boil a pot of pasta, Shell would bag an eye-popping £838,000. Of course they should apologise, it's a weekday, the Commonwealth Games are in full flow. No explanation. Someone decided this was the best day to launch what seems to be an inferior untested app. Scotrail might be transport operator of the year but vying for worst app launch.

We’re sorry for the delay to anyone switching their ScotRail app today. We are working with our technical teams to clear this as quickly as possible and we apologise for the inconvenience. Customers who are having issues can continue to use the old ScotRail app to purchase tickets until midday.

Just spent time filling in the heating oils support form @advicedotscot for elderly parents only for your site to register an error. No explanation. Looks like I'll have to resubmit. Their heating oil supplier of 50+ yrs not listed.

I worked it out. Don't add any attachments at all. Look for supplier under LPG and then change the field below to say heating oil. Submitted and it went through. I then sent the attachments by email. I shouldn't have had to do this though..it should be easier.

Just an update. My parents, 80+, both on pension age disability payments, state pensions, very modest workplace pension for one, no debts rejected for heating oil support. No 'evidence' of hardship apparently.

“Far too many households are saddled with debt to their energy suppliers which they simply cannot repay. Government, industry and its regulator have provided no effective plan to reduce this debt and help to keep people warm and safe in their homes.” – Frazer Scott, CEO at @EAS_Scotland.

BP paid £422 million in windfall tax last year, and in the first three months of 2026 alone, its profits more than doubled to £2.4 billion. These are BP's own figures, and they prove two things: ✅ Energy firms can afford the windfall tax, and ✅ It's raising real money that should be going to help families struggling with their bills. Thankfully the Chancellor is now closing a loophole that let companies like BP cut their UK tax bill using overseas corporate structures. 🗣️The public agrees: 64% of Brits support taxing oil and gas companies' excess profits, according to YouGov polling out today. Just 16% oppose it. #EndFuelPoverty #EnergyBills #CostOfLiving
