Canada’s publicly funded research programs should focus on merit as the sole criteria. Identity politics has destroyed a lot of the academic culture we used to pride ourselves on as a nation. Just ask many academics who are afraid to speak out. We spend $4.5 billion a year on the tri-agency research programs, including $311M a year on the Canada Research Chairs program alone. Time for a change.
If you were wondering why Canada isn't a world leader in AI... Today @YorkUniversity posted a job opening for a tenured professor of Artificial Intelligence: "...this position is open only to qualified researchers who self-identify as women or gender non-conforming (e.g., genderfluid, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, trans man, trans woman)."

If a landmark conjecture can be solved by an AI exploring known methods, it tells us that the problem did not require a new paradigm to resolve. Far from ending mathematics, AI exposes the boundary where routine calculation stops and creative exploration must begin.
Fields Medalists Are Wrong: Why AI Is an Accelerant, Not a Bane, to Progress in Mathematics On the heels of OpenAI having solved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, about half of the living Fields Medalists signed an open letter titled “A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics”. As of October 4th, 2026, the letter was ultimately signed by over 8,000 (and counting) mathematicians and academics in related fields. Conjecture Institute Fellow and mathematician @PaulRRobichaud and President @ChipkinLogan disagree with the spirit of the letter, which is essentially that AI is a problem for mathematics. On the contrary, it is a catalyst that opens entirely new vistas to mathematicians that were heretofore unreachable. Below is Paul and Logan’s response to the letter. 👇

.@physicsgraph is going to change the world. I would've killed for a site like this in my formative years.

Imagine thinking super abundance and wealth resulting from AI (and say the creation of fusion power) would cause CEOs to say “let’s fire almost everyone” rather than “let’s award most bonuses while expanding and hiring way more to do more of this great stuff”.

Designed to give LLM graders the data they crave. Hopefully should eliminate a couple frustrating edge cases that vision models struggled with!

No reason to keep going Tell that to everyone who doesnt have access Everyone who dies of cancer waiting on the production of a cure Everyone poor who could be educated by simulated tutors No reason to keep going is a refrian for those who have a lot already
Mathematician Terence Tao: "we have to slow down AI. the pace is insane, and there's no reason to be this fast — no reason at all" It's amazing how willing we are to change everything without any idea what happens afterward These are extremely nonlinear dynamics

The latest MrBeast video has him building an entire village - housing, a school, well and plumbing system, power grid, play areas, farm, marketplace, and community center. And the entire time he's talking about how it's because the kids in the village used to be stuck in child labor for cacao, so that we can eat chocolate. He's paying for five years of school meals for the kids, because free meals makes kids more likely to attend school rather than working. He actually talks about child labor in chocolate *all the time* and his company Feastables is genuinely much more ethical than the big chocolate companies, pays living wages to farmers and is part of a traceable/open supply chain project. Regardless of whether you like his content, the guy is doing incredible things across the world and using his money to try to make a difference. I find it pretty remarkable, especially when compared with the incredibly shallow stuff that most other rich influencers spend their money on.

AI allows for more rapid error correction, so we do need to be this fast. Indeed faster. Much faster. Lives and the future of civilization depend on us solving problems in time. That’s what progress is.

Checking in here on the AI apocalypse: - incredible advances across math, science and medicine at unfathomable rates - data centers creating skilled labor jobs - effectively rebooting the middle class and US manufacturing - electricity needs driving massive investment to modernize and reinforce our aging electrical grid - AI unlocking GDP growth by revitalizing sector after sector - driving exceptional innovation at all layers of the stack and economy - upskilling millions of workers with superpowers - pushing geopolitical advantage to the west Reads like an apocalypse

Knowledge, bah! Who needs more knowledge? It is well known for having <gasp> Side-Effects. Whereas ignorance never hurt anyone!

I wrote such a program in the 1980s on the BBC Micro, with additional frills like disabling Escape and having it beg for its life. I was trying to demonstrate the philosophical absurdity of doing what is depicted in the cartoon and what is happening in real life now.

A lot of apocalypse obsession is just escapism for people who’d rather imagine the world ending than fix the life they’re living.
