Germany and Spain stick together for a new pan-European Gen 6 jet
An exciting step for European sovereignty at ILA Berlin: "Team Gen 6", a group of eight leading German defence and aviation companies signed a strategic positioning paper. The German and French governments have announced a realignment of the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS). While the development of the overarching 'System of Systems' is progressing as before, the 6th-generation fighter aircraft integrated within it requires a new, agile industrial setup.
Together with @AUTOFLUG, @DiehlDefence, @HENSOLDT, @Liebherr, @MBDADeutschland, @MTUAeroEng, and @RohdeSchwarz, we at Airbus Defence and Space stand ready to take on the responsibility for a 6th-generation fighter aircraft. Closely integrated with the German partners, the Spanish industry is also forming up with the companies Indra, Airbus, @Grupo_Oesia, GMV, @ITPAero, and Sener.
As Team Gen 6, we have the capabilities and the capacities. Now, we are looking for close alignment with policymakers and the Air Force to drive forward a superior European air combat system for collective security.

Can Airbus muscle its way into GCAP?
“If the Germans turn up with a fat bag of cash and a 150-jet order, then maybe they will make room for them in the programme,” said Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

EXC: MoD is set to divert more than £250mn extra to the Army’s beleaguered Ajax programme over the next 4 years, acc to ppl familiar with matter
Projected lifetime cost of the programme is expected to come to an additional £1bn overall, they say
More cash for Ajax is likely to be highly controversial given it’s been hit with cost overruns, lengthy delays and persistent issues around noise and vibration

EXC: Treasury is preparing to seize control from the MoD of spending on the GCAP multibillion-pound fighter jet programme, as part of DIP settlement
Turf grab is part of the final DIP wrangling, with PM set to unveil c. £15bn extra for military up til 2030, including c. £6bn for GCAP, in an announcement as soon as next week (with Thurs 11 June mooted as target date)
PM and Chx have a “fundamental disagreement” over GCAP, which Reeves fears could be “just the next HS2” - ie beset by spiralling costs, delivery delays and shrinking scope - acc to govt figure. (Person close to Reeves denies characterisation of disagreement with PM)
The Treasury bid to take control of GCAP spending is designed to help avoid repeat of past MoD debacles on equipment programmes
Officials are set to justify the move by pointing to complicated intl structure of GCAP, which UK is developing with Japan and Italy, and complexity of programme... but some govt insiders fear those same structures will make spending difficult to rein in
Comes ahead of Japanese PM’s planned visit to UK next week
