Gray Newell on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) & VR (1/2 🧵) This unlisted YouTube video clip features an interview between Gray Newell and Tyler McVicker (formerly of Valve News Network). (Full video video link in reply). Gray Newell, son of Gabe Newell (CEO of Valve & co-founder of Starfish Neuroscience), is the founder of Naetyr Games, a game development studio. Gabe has been heavily involved in BCI research through Starfish Neuroscience, which I've discussed in detail before—check the pinned post in my community or profile for more insights. In this clip, Gray shares his thoughts on the anime Sword Art Online (SAO) & how its depiction of neural VR gaming with full dive/full sensory immersion could become a reality. For those unfamiliar, Sword Art Online is a Japanese anime series centered around BCI/Neural VR multiplayer gaming, offering experiences with full sensory perception—taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight, thermoception, etc. Gray discusses how future gaming could mirror the best aspects of SAO (with fail safes unlike the distopic scenes in SAO), envisioning a world where neural VR brings games to life in ways we can only dream of today. The clip also touches on the transformative potential of BCI technology for medical applications. Make sure to watch the full interview in the reply—it’s a must-see as this is not available for all. ᯅ Beyond the Screen: Why Valve’s Gabe Newell is Building the Final Platform (Update Thread). 1/4 The Problem with Meat Gabe Newell has a thesis: Your eyes are just "Meat Peripherals." While Apple and Meta are fighting to put better screens on your face, Starfish Neuroscience is building the tech to put the image behind your eyes. Gaben’s disdain for biology is clear: "Eyes were created by a low-cost bidder who didn't care about failure rates." Gabe doesn’t want to fix the monitor. He wants to bypass it.

🚨 The State of Molecular Machines & Nanobots via Atomically Precise Manufacturing (APM): The foundation for full-sensory Matrix-level VR, advanced medicine, brain-computer interfaces and universal manufacturing. This is the long-awaited post with a full video discussing the current state of a stealth startup developing futuristic electrical nanobots seen in sci-fi, along with the path to an APM nanobot future. A unique and insightful video --> highly recommended. Jeremy Howard, a leading figure in APM, argues that the “stealth startup” model (which he followed for 15 years) hinders progress by limiting collaboration and creating legal barriers to expert communication (6:06, 10:11, 6:16). He calls it “stupid” and you may agree after watching. On timelines, Chris Barton predicts that within 5–10 years, we could see open-source, well-published methods for building simple molecular machines (3:08). This aligns with Ray Kurzweil's timeline as well! Watch the full video to understand how nanobots will be developed as it demands multidisciplinary collaboration across chemistry, engineering, surface science, physics, biology and protein engineering to create a shared framework and accelerate solutions.

As per my promise, here’s the hidden (unlisted on YouTube) interview of Mary Lou Jepsen (CEO of Openwater) by Peter H. Diamandis. Openwater is one of the promising non-invasive Brain Computer Interface (BCI) companies. youtu.be/CqsglRFjEKI

Ray Kurzweil on Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence 13 years ago, in 2011, Ray Kurzweil shared his visionary thoughts on the future of Virtual Reality and AI. His insights are still incredibly relevant today. Kurzweil, an American computer scientist, author, entrepreneur, futurist, and inventor, discussed how BCIs (Brain Computer Interface) in the form of nanotechnology will revolutionize VR. He also predicted the unfolding impact of AI in the years to come. [📽️: Big Think, YT]

I know some of you have heard this, but Twitch streamer @ perrikaryal (same username on X) recently played Elden Ring using just an EEG-powered Brain Computer Interface (BCI), yes she controlled the game with her mind. Her groundbreaking feat was even featured in IEEE Spectrum Article (link below). This is no small task - using EEG to detect meaningful brain signals is notoriously difficult, requiring clever engineering & extensive training. The future of BCI and Neural VR gaming is looking incredibly bright. And yes, I said VR, because in the future, all games will be Full-Dive VR (FDVR), offering complete/full sensory perception—sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. But don't worry, traditional 2D games won't disappear. Instead, your cozy virtual space could be filled with virtual PCs and monitors letting you play your favorite games in any format - with full sensory immersion. [📽️: @ perrikaryal, YT]

EMG or Electromyography deciphers electrical activity from muscle contractions, enabling real-time diagnostics and advancements in prosthetics, neurorehabilitation and human-machine interfacing with unparalleled precision. EMG is a great tool for the VR or XR space. But, this is just a step towards actual neurostimulation that works by stimulating the neurons in your brain and interacting with the neurons in the Spinal Cord if need be; known as BCI (Brain Computer Interface) or Neural Interface. The Point to Note is that ultimately all interfaces (screen, mouse, EMG, controllers, etc.) whether it be for VR, AR, XR, PC, Console, etc., will all be BCIs/Neural Interfaces in the end and EMG is just a step forward towards the end goal that is BCI. BCIs will be as common as phones are now and we will be used to it whether they are invasive or non-invasive BCIs. Similarly as we got used to the car, in an era of Horse Carts. Check my pinned post about Gabe Newell (if it is still pinned, otherwise it'll be on Highlights) for more information; especially check out the video. [📽️ : Reddit, Actual GitHub Source below]
