the incessant use of "luddite" as an insult makes me think AI bros truly believe the historical Luddites were the villains. How does that happen? Prager U Kids?

This is Novi Sad, the site of the horrific awning collapse that killed 16 people, sparking the massive student-led protests that led to Vučić's demise two years later.
Seeing the entire place bounce like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Re-upping our 2-part series on Serbia's radical student movement, with Boris & Rey of @tenepod. The movement has much in common with *actual* populism (ie radical grassroots democracy), navigating a very fraught political-social landscape & recent history. xitter.cf/MarkAmesExiled/status/…
🚨🚨NEW @RadioWarNerd — our 2-part series on Serbia's anti-government protests, defying the usual protest politics of the post-Cold War era. In part 1, Boris & Rey of the great @tenepod give background via the career rise of post-nationalist dorktator Alexandar Vucic.

I wrote this about the student protests in Serbia at the beginning of last year, for @NewLeftReview Sidecar. Re-sharing because a few people have asked about the background and because it's my favorite thing I wrote about the protests newleftreview.org/sidecar/po…

I DONT WANT THEIR SPIRIT I WANT LELIANA KILLING PEOPLE WITH HER THIGHS AGAIN
BioWare may be gone, but their spirit lives on in games like Baldur's Gate, The Witcher, and more. bit.ly/3W6cYC3

I love when films lay things out for you, directly, to your face. It's right there and people still just miss it entirely. Somehow just flies right past.

Revolución social e institucional en Serbia. Con toda la legitimidad democrática.
I don’t think this essay by Fredric Jameson gets nearly enough attention. One aspect that I particularly enjoy about this piece is that he doesn’t just explain how Hegel is applicable to Marxist criticism, as other works often do. He criticizes Marxist critics for their++

We can't brute force compute all possible moves in Go, a static game with a simple 19 x 19 grid, yet somehow people think we're going to simulate a dynamic system of trillions of cells each containing trillions of molecules.
If you had an exponential amount of compute you could solve simulate biology exactly and wouldn't need to run any experiments.
Some of you will think "of course, but that's an unrealistic assumption" and others will think "no, you need experiments even with that much compute. That's just How It's Done".
You would of course need evaluations once you have a solution, but you don't in principle need experiments to find it: Experiments are a way to save compute, dating from a time when it was much more expensive.
And I think the presentation is exponential but real systems aren't irreducibly exponential. AlphaFold worked, after all.

Dragon Age Origins is a fantastic RPG, and one of the most enjoyable fantasy games ever made - but can we take a moment to appreciate the comedy gold that is the dialogue and banter from the NPCs, too? It's 10/10 😅

Elon wants chip fabs on the Moon now. Lunar soil is 20% silicon, he says, so you just mine it, refine it, stamp out solar cells and chips. Next level of the video game. His words.
He's a walking 1954 Popular Science cover. "Moon Factories by 1975!" You can picture him red-faced at some poor SpaceX engineer, jabbing a finger at a render: "I saw this in a magazine! Why can't you guys do this?" Because the magazine was fiction, Elon. That's why.
Boring question one: water. A single leading-edge fab burns through millions of gallons of ultrapure water every day, the kind filtered and polished until it turns chemically aggressive and rips ions out of anything it touches. Making it takes an industrial plant of its own. On the Moon you'd be chipping ice out of permanently shadowed craters at minus 230 C and feeding it through a purification chain that doesn't exist, powered by energy that also doesn't exist.
Boring question two: shaking. Lithography machines sit on tuned vibration isolation, springs and masses and counterweights engineered around Earth's gravity down to the millimeter. Lunar gravity is one sixth of that. Every spring rate and tuned mass in the stack assumes 1 g, and the Moon has its own moonquakes nobody has fully mapped. So forget shipping a fab up there. You'd have to redesign the entire physics package from scratch, in a hailstorm of charged abrasive dust that eats seals and bearings for breakfast.
And here's the part that makes it funny instead of just dumb. NASA studied all of this while Elon was still in college. Ignatiev and Freundlich published the actual paper in 1991: waste silicon from regolith processing, vacuum-deposited thin-film cells laid right on the surface. Serious work, fifteen years of it, and by 2005 the best anyone could promise was 5-8% efficient cells sprayed on melted moon glass, economical only at megawatt scale. Chips? Never in the plan. Not once, in thirty years of study. Then a 2006 follow-up walked back even the crude version, because melted regolith is too lumpy and dirty to make a decent substrate. The 2025 research gave up on purifying lunar silicon entirely and just ships the semiconductor layer from Earth.
Thirty years of papers saying "hard pass" and this guy shows up with the crayon version of a 1991 NASA study, calls it visionary, and the fanboys clap like he invented the Moon. He isn't a genius ahead of his time. He's a man who skips the reading, and it shows every single time he opens his mouth just to pump his cult stocks.
Elon Musk explains how to build AI satellites on the moon from lunar silicon and aluminum, and says 500 to 1,000 terawatts a year cannot be launched from Earth
“Well, the lunar soil is 20% silicon or something like that. So you can mine the silicon on the moon, refine it, and create the solar cells and the radiators on the moon. So get the radiators out of aluminum. So there’s plenty of silicon and aluminum on the moon to make the cells and the radiators. The chips you could send from Earth because they’re pretty light. But maybe at some point you make them on the moon, too."
"Like I said, it does seem like a sort of a video game situation where it’s difficult but not impossible to get to the next level. I don’t see any way that you could do 500 to 1,000 terawatts per year launched from Earth.”
