AFAIK Dhanteras has got nothing to do with Odisha.
It is a North Indian festival that was used by the Baniya class as a business opportunity to make people buy and spend.
In Odisha, Marwadis, who own many gold, jewellery and garments/textiles shops, used it as a promotional event. Media and newspapers also played their part in advertising.
If a business is giving you discounts on this day then no problem, go ahead and spend all you like.

The truth is, people were never particularly excited about spending most of their lives working just to afford the basic things they need.
People want to create, contribute, learn, feel useful, and be part of something meaningful. They want to feel appreciated, supported, and connected to others. They want enough time to enjoy their lives and actually recover from the demands of work.
Nobody dreams of exchanging the majority of their time and energy just to earn the right to survive.

My favorite Halloween story: one year my friend David dressed as Laura Palmer (wrapped in plastic, dead leaves etc), and no one recognized the costume until we passed a drag queen who pointed at her giant fake boobs and yelled "Hey Laura, get a load of these twin peaks!"
