BREAKING: The National Audit Office has agreed to @TransportActio2 's request to investigate the privatised Lower Thames Crossing. About time too! There's been no scrutiny of its very weak business case and the privatisation of LTC and Dartford Crossings
theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…
Why does the new Bill to enable the privatisation and tolling of Lower Thames Crossing and Dartford Crossings also seem to allow tolling on other roads too, including existing roads?
🚨 A new front for Labour’s war on motorists❔🚨
💷 First, fuel duty up 5p + VAT in the New Year
🛣️ Now, new powers that could see roads tolled everywhere
❓ They claim it’s just for the Lower Thames Crossing & maybe other mega projects. So why on earth does @UKLabour’s Bill go much further?
🥀 After everything they’ve done to drivers, would YOU trust Labour not to fleece you again?

A useful history of the Dartford Crossings. However, National Highways own data, presented to the DCO examination, shows the Lower Thames Crossing will only provide 5yrs 'relief' at Dartford. And will cost £11bn, with toll revenues privatised at both sites

FINALLY GB News, the Mail, the Tories, the RAC and the AA are waking up to the fact that Labour are planning to privatise new roads - including the Lower Thames Crossing and Dartford - and charge tolls on them. About time. The new Highways (Financing) Bill

Interesting article on Lower Thames Crossing by journalist Chris Ames. He's spotted that the DfT's language has changed on the privatisation of LTC and the Dartford Crossings, from being 100% certain, to saying they're only considering it "at this stage"

£11 billion on more road capacity while we're supposed to be cutting emissions. The refusal to publish the business case tells you everything.
We agree. There must be more transparency about the Lower Thames Crossing

Congratulations for exposing the dishonesty of the DfT in its attempt to avoid scrutiny of the LTC project. The public has an absolute right to expect big infrastructure decisions to be supported by evidence of strong economic benefits.
We must be allowed to see the OBC.

It's somewhat dispiriting.
Back to your original message though, I will look into TAN's concerns about Lower Thames Crossing.

Shocking example of mega project too big to fail getting away with no opportunity to scrutinise the business case?!
Great new blog on Lower Thames Crossing by @TransportActio2 (TAN)
In an era of tightly constrained public finances, committing over £3.1 billion without allowing independent economic scrutiny is a massive democratic failure!

We agree that transport spending should be redistributed around the country into high value rail freight and public transport schemes, not wasted on the £11bn Lower Thames Crossing - which will only relieve the Dartford Crossings for 5 years

Mile for mile, the Lower Thames Crossing is likely to be more expensive than HS2. Irreplaceable ancient woodland will be destroyed.
All of this for some very short-term congestion relief!
It's not too late for the government to pause work on it.

Lower Thames Crossing is a road crash in the making.
It would cost billions, fuel climate change, generate more traffic, pollution and road casualties.
But it's not too late to stop it.
@OllyGloverLD - NAO has agreed to look at it, but no timing yet. Let's get a date!

The reason for the Dartford toll hikes? The government is 'fattening the calf before market' ahead of privatising the Dartford Crossings and the Lower Thames Crossing - in perpetuity. The Dartford toll hikes are just the beginning...
