Dmitry Smilevsky broke Ivan Vasiliev’s record with 46 entrechats in Giselle. Full respect for the risk he takes and the total commitment he gives every time he steps on stage. An exceptional dancer.

In June 1928, Kelley “Dolphus” Stroud won the 5,000-meter Rocky Mountain regional Olympic trial in Denver. The winner had been told that transportation to the national trials in Boston would be provided, but after Stroud won, officials denied him the travel funding they had given to other competitors. Stroud and his white coach, L. M. Hunt, believed racism was behind the decision. Stroud refused to let the decision end his Olympic hopes. With about $10, a golf club used as a walking stick and a sign reading “Denver to Olympia,” he began the roughly 1,765-mile journey to Boston. Over 12 days, he walked, ran and hitchhiked across the country, eventually reaching Harvard Stadium just six hours before his race. He entered the 5,000-meter trial, but the journey had taken an enormous physical toll. Stroud collapsed during the race and could not finish. His Olympic dream ended there, but his accomplishments went far beyond that single race. Earlier that year, he had broken a 25-year-old record for the fastest round-trip climb of Pikes Peak, completing it in three hours and ten minutes. Stroud was also an exceptional scholar. He graduated cum laude from Colorado College in 1931 and became the first Black student elected to Phi Beta Kappa there. He later earned a master's degree at the University of Mexico and went on to work as an educator, writer, entrepreneur and community leader. His story is not simply about an athlete who failed to reach the Olympics. It is about what happened when a talented Black runner was denied the same opportunity given to his competitors, then decided that the denial would not determine how far he could go. He did not reach the Olympic starting line under equal circumstances, but he crossed nearly 1,800 miles of America to reach it at all.

Benjamin Franklin’s glass armonica used to be banned in some German towns, amid fears that its ethereal sound could cause illness or madness. Before those bans, its sound inspired Mozart to write Adagio in C, K. 356 (K. 617a), in 1791. Its ethereal sound later became surrounded by strange fears and legends. Have you ever heard it? 🎵

Exoplanet... A rare natural wonder: a "fire rainbow" spotted over West Virginia 🌈 An extremely rare optical phenomenon—a circumhorizontal arc—has been captured in the sky over the United States. This effect occurs when the sun is high above the horizon (at an angle of at least 58 degrees) and its rays are refracted by flat, hexagonal ice crystals within cirrus clouds.

I’ve realised that the paintings hanging on the walls of my imaginary rooms are usually paintings I’d quite like to own. Which raises the question of why I haven’t painted them properly yet. “Fruit Bowl in Morning Light”, 35X45cm. #artisticloophole
