This is an excellent debunker of AI consciousness by some of the biggest names in consciousness science (@anilkseth @De_dicto and Giulio Tononi)
Don't listen to the techbros. They have no idea what they're talking about where consciousness is concerned.

New: the DHS officials who tried to search the man who wiped his GrapheneOS phone lied. They pushed him about having child abuse images. Documents reveal that was a pretext; he wasn't suspected of this at all. He's a Stop Cop City activist 404media.co/dhs-said-they-se…
It is a universally acknowledged truth that all bubbles burst. The only question is if we will hold their promoters accountable.
Nobody is sure when or if the AI bubble will burst. But its 100% clear that unregulated Silicon Valley and Wall Street corporations have endangered everyone without good reason.
Time to take control and reshape the tech industry, before its too late. Must read by @openmarkets:

OpenAI later clarified that the device in their offices recording all conversations and interactions to an unknown end was, surprisingly, not one of their own products. Their court filing went on to explain “this is an outrage, spying is our lane.”
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

The Flock saga is reaching truly chilling levels: when an Illinois college tried to cancel its contract and the company refused to take down its cameras, the college covered them. Then workers in unmarked vehicles repeatedly removed the coverings.

Why are so many AI companies run by crooks and financed by Nvidia? I went over one of them that collapsed last week, an AI company called Firmus. It’s not a good sign. Some strong echoes of the late stage subprime crisis.

So let's recap:
- @AMZNforClimate reports show Amazon's emissions have *increased* despite its climate pledge
- The company doesn't know how to reach net-zero emissions
- Execs apparently think we're stupid enough to believe they care about the climate

Terms like "fancy autocomplete" were reductive sure but I think were also making the very important corrective point that AI is, as Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor have so eloquently put it, a normal technology, and not The Temporal Instantiation of the Machine God

THREAD. Did you know that Minneapolis police deployed 101 personnel to a 7-person vigil held one morning at Renee Good's memorial? The cops generated $1.92 million in overtime cash for themselves.

A reminder that Anthropic has a partnership with Palantir, and their unreliable models are actively being used domestically and internationally to in fact, "kill a bunch of people."
Dario responds to critics: “I would rather they make fun of me than to wake up one day and discover that someone used Claude to k*ll a bunch of people.”
“Almost every day I'm made fun of on social media because our model's biology safeguards are too strong. And biology students complain, they make jokes that we can't use the model.”
“But the reason for that is that we have strong safeguards. And I would rather they make fun of me than to wake up one day and discover that someone used our model, Claude, to kill a bunch of people. I don't want that.”
“I would repeat the same point, which is that it shouldn't be my responsibility alone or Anthropic's responsibility alone or all of the AI company's responsibility alone or even one government's responsibility alone. This is bigger than all of us.”

This is why I find the discourse how AI might start killing us a bit puzzling. AI is already being used to kill people on a mass scale -- that's a problem that deserves the immediate response beyond any hypothetical threat

Now THIS is a trend we can get behind!
If a worker drives and Amazon-branded van, wears an Amazon-branded vest, and follows a route determined by Amazon, they should be treated as an employee.
Calling them sub-contractors just makes it easier for Amazon to exploit them.
The Delivery Protection Act has arrived in Chicago! Today is the City Council hearing and we are on our way to passing this bill to protect Amazon workers and public safety. Chicago is here to let Amazon know they can’t set aside the wellbeing of our delivery drivers! Thank you, Alderwoman Julia Ramirez (@the12thward) for standing with us in this fight!
