We wanted to see who benefitted from New York’s broken housing market. This is what we found. Check out the @nytimes investigation I did with the awesome @camellia_elaine and @stefanoschen. Huge thanks to @SteveEder, @SheilaCoronel and @columbiajourn nytimes.com/2022/07/24/us/de…
Yesterday @mcclatchy fired reporters covering city hall, state house, environment and education from @thestate (among others)
Glad that means they can now focus on “journalism that is differentiated, consequential and difficult to replicate” like this:
Devastated to see huge layoffs @thestate and across @mcclatchy today. I can't overstate the vital work these journalists do or avoid concluding corporate leadership is in a race to the bottom. They devalued expertise and pushed AI as solutions to a subscriber crisis they created
SC Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for Alex Murdaugh. The result is not a shock for anyone who followed the revelations of Becky Hill's contact with the jury, and her pursuit of fame following the trial. sccourts.org/media/opinions/…

This is the result of reporting by @camellia_elaine, @ted_clfrd and me that helped lead to this arrest. Thanks to @rcallimachi for staying on the story, when many of the victims still don't know what comes next. Deed theft is still a big problem in NYC

James Brown had a dream to leave his fortune to provide scholarships for children.
18 years after his death, none have been given out.
For @thestate, I investigated how the theft of millions and 2 decades of legal battles have held up his estate. thestate.com/news/local/crim…
Today's Supreme Court ruling is a major blow to Planned Parenthood in SC, one of the state's two abortion providers.
It allows SC to withhold Medicaid dollars for the non-abortion, reproductive and women's healthcare services that their clinics provide. thestate.com/news/politics-g…

Not only is @RichlandCoSC's tax map system down, but the logo appears to have been replaced with a picture of Eminem.
Will the real Richland County please stand up?
The only thing I hated more than this statue was the fact that it was taken from us. Awesome work by @BristowatHome, @m0rgan_hughes and @JAABPhoto

SC just scheduled its 3rd execution of the year.
Meanwhile, an autopsy report confirms that 2 people who received the lethal injection died w lungs full of fluid.
It raises concerns that the pentobarbital used during executions causes extreme suffering.

I wrote a first person account of the firing squad. Here it is. It’s like seeing a unicorn in the wild. Might be the only first person story I’ve written professionally. apnews.com/article/south-car…
The US Supreme Court has declined to stop #BradSigmon’s execution by firing squad. If it goes ahead it will be the first in SC AND only the 4th time in US since 1976.
The last hope is clemency from @henrymcmaster but he has never issued a clemency.
Sigmon is scheduled to be executed today at 6 p.m. for the murders of his ex-girlfriend’s parents. He was sentenced to death in 2002 and, at 67, would be the oldest person executed in SC history

Tomorrow, South Carolina plans to execute #BradSigmon by firing squad.
I took a deep dive into how that process is likely to be carried out and how a former prosecutor pushed for the law to include the firing squad to save people from the electric chair.

Death row inmate Brad Sigmon has chosen to die by firing squad - the first in SC history.
At 65 he'll also be the oldest person executed in SC.
SC legalized the firing squad in 2021 and it was upheld by the state supreme court in 2024.
