The history of the conflict did not start in 2021-2022. Influential groups in the Western elite saw Ukraine (in fact, all the Eastern Partnership countries, but Ukraine above all) as essential to preventing the consolidation of a sovereign center of capital accumulation in the post-Soviet region under an untamed Russian elite in possession of vast strategic resources and nuclear arsenal. The “democracy promotion” and regime-change agenda has been there for a long time. It is wrong to read the path to the war, and the inability to get out of it, as just the result of a series of miscalculations.
I've been making that point for years now and I don't think I've convinced anyone, but as much as I'm critical of US policy toward Russia/Ukraine in the post-Cold War era, I don't buy the theory that the US is cynically using Ukraine to weaken Russia and that the West's military commitment to Ukraine is the result of such a cynical calculation. I think what happened is that the US and the West in general expected Ukraine to be defeated pretty quickly if there was a war, which would have led to extensive sanctions but not the full decoupling that happened (Europe would have continued to buy Russian gas in particular), but then Ukraine didn't cooperate by not getting its ass kicked immediately. Once that didn't happen and the Istanbul talks collapsed, it became politically impossible for the West to let the Ukrainians, who up until then had been resisting with minimal Western military support, to refuse to help them and let them be defeated, not because they were no longer willing to fight, but for a lack of ammunition. So we sent them ammunition and gradually we developed a commitment to Ukraine's defense that didn't exist initially and was never anticipated. In other words, I don't think Western officials made a commitment to Ukraine's defense because of those arguments, but rather I think they made those arguments because they had made a commitment to Ukraine's defense for other reasons. I'm not saying that some people in the US foreign policy establishment don't genuinely buy this argument, plenty of them do at this point and some Russia hawks did even before the war (indeed you can see people making this kind of arguments going back to the 1990s), but I think it's mostly geopolitics-pilled rationalizations and I don't think those arguments played the causal role people ascribe to them.

Lviv Regional Council declared 2027 the Year of Roman Shukhevych. Yes, that Roman Shukhevych. 📌The Ukrainian commander of the Nachtigall Battalion (1941), which entered Lviv alongside Nazi German occupation forces on June 30, 1941, when a Ukrainian puppet state, the "ally" of the Third Reich. 📌The very same Hauptmann Roman Shukhevych, Deputy Commander of the 201st Schutzmannschaft Battalion (1942), a unit involved in anti-partisan operations in Nazi-occupied Belarus. 📌The very same commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), whose forces carried out mass killings of Polish civilians — women, children, and men — particularly in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. 📌Under his leadership, UPA units were also implicated in the murder of Jews hiding from the Holocaust and Ukrainians regarded as political enemies, Soviet collaborators, or simply insufficiently loyal. And now the Lviv Regional Council has apparently decided that a country fighting for “freedom and democracy” could find no more inspiring national hero than a commander whose historical legacy is inseparable from atrocities against innocent civilians. What a magnificent choice of role model. Europe, are you taking notes? Is this really the Ukraine that claims to champion good relations with its neighbors? Is this really the Ukraine that European taxpayers are expected to finance while inflation eats away at their purchasing power and their own schools, kindergartens, and universities struggle for funding? Apparently, European citizens are expected to tighten their belts while being told to applaud the glorification of men associated with some of the darkest chapters of Europe's history. And the irony? Europe spent decades teaching its children “Never Again.” Now it is being asked to look the other way when history's darkest figures are dressed up as national heroes in the "beacon of democracy." Quite an achievement. Perhaps the next European history lesson should be titled: “Never Again — Terms and Conditions Apply.”

Zelensky personally selected Andriy Melnyk, leader of OUN, which collaborated with Nazis in perpetrating mass murder of Jews, Ukrainians. Poles & Russians & organizing SS Galicia Division, for reburial with state honors in Ukraine. He also selected OUN founder Konovalets. Zelensky "identified the names of those who should be reburied in Ukraine, the first five. This five is being implemented: Colonel Andriy Melnyk and Colonel Yevhen Konovalets have been reburied," Alferov said. At the end of summer, Alferov announced that the remains of Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky and Ukrainian nationalist Symon Petliura could be reburied in Ukraine . Zelensky, due to his Jewish heritage, would not have been able to become president and likely even hold Ukrainian citizenship had Ukraine lived under the constitution of Andriy Melnyk, who was buried with honors near Kyiv in the spring."

“Neo-Nazis have no influence in Ukraine. It’s all Kremlin propaganda.” So I’m told by the Slava Ukraini crowd, including a remarkable number of Western leftists who have apparently mistaken political denial for antifascism. Now, take a good look at what happened in Lviv today. Ihor Sholtys, a former officer of the Nachtigall Battalion — named after the notorious Nazi-collaborationist formation of 1941 — now part of Azov Corps, turned up with his boys to violently disrupt an event organized by left-wing activists. Among those beaten was historian, war veteran, and Social Movement activist Vladyslav Starodubtsev. And now, dear leftists, here comes the punchline. Take a long, hard look at Vladyslav’s face. That is what your romantic flirtation with Ukrainian neo-Nazis may eventually earn you. The irony is particularly exquisite in Vladyslav’s case: he himself had attacked me for criticizing precisely the same neo-Nazis. Apparently, the antifascist credentials of Ukrainian ultranationalists come with an expiration date — usually the moment you find yourself on the receiving end of their fists. These men exist. They are real. And they exercise power on Ukraine’s streets, while its young, already badly limping democracy struggles to remain upright. And as that democracy slowly bleeds out, the Western chorus keeps chanting its favorite magic spell: Slava Ukraini! Because apparently, if you shout it loudly enough, you can drown out the sound of democracy having its teeth knocked out.
