Do you all realize what is happening?
Science is becoming privatized.
Theoretical science is increasingly becoming compute-driven, and similarly, experimental science will increasingly become robotics-driven.
Both increase the role of capital and reduce the role of talent. Ergo, fewer and fewer humans are going to be needed to do frontier science.
And when fewer humans are needed, global collaboration becomes less critical. The days of science as a public, academic good - with papers being transparently published on Arxiv and open journals might be coming to an end.
Now, in a globally open economy, this might have been alright, but fundamentally, this puts every country except US and China in a difficult spot. This includes India, UK, Japan, Korea etc. Geopolitical turmoil makes it even more obvious.
Notice how every single scientist that OpenAI is collaborating with for reviewing their latest AI-led science, is based in the US.
Will it be wise for Indian nuclear physicists to use ChatGPT models for their scientific analysis? All secrets are lost when you use cloud-based LLMs.
Some are starting to recognize this. (See @UKSovereignAI). I think we will see similar response from almost all of the top 10 countries.
Science, after all, is power.
Announcing three major scientific discoveries, one each in mathematics (harmonic analysis), computer science (complexity theory), and physics (quantum field theory).

NOBODY wants a city on Mars.
NOBODY wants Al in every app.
NOBODY wants data centers in space.
NOBODY wants humanoid robots or flying cars.
We want CLEAN WATER.
We want a STABLE CLIMATE.
We want a HABITABLE PLANET.
We want WILDLIFE tO SURVIVE.
WE WANT TO LIVE!
If P=NP we've got way, way bigger problems than time wasted buddy.
(And before anyone comment, I think that the arguments that it will be non-constructive so therefore harmless is pure cope, as is the assumption that it will be too high of a degree polynomial to be useful.)
I actually dont mind people thinking this way. What I cant stand, what absolutely disgusts me, is people thinking that humans have no place in intelectual production anymore. Inteligence, seeking understanding and communicating that understanding to others is what makes us human.
There is nobody to do the understanding but us!!! Have you lost your mind? These are machines we give tasks, we made them for us, we use them for our own purposes, including understanding. I feel like I'm helplessly watching my fellow man just completely lose their minds

To panicans who think
1. Labor is going to ≈0
2. UBI solves it
Yall are aware the stationary wealth distribution is Pareto right?
I would not trust any of these results until they are confirmed by actual mathematicians. We keep seeing reports of LLMs verifying the wrong statement, I see no reason why I should trust these ghouls
They'd rather sit back in the cuck chair and let LLMs live their lives for them than admit that maybe our chosen struggles have importance beyond the "intellectual contributions" made in the service of a broken, antihuman economy that would see us all living in absolute squalor
You might have 1–5 years to contribute intellectually to the world before AGI. What should you do with them?
Excellent advice from @jaschasd (Anthropic) at Stanford. Skip Netflix tonight and watch this instead.

what a sad, pitiful existence it is to think that you have less than 5 years left to contribute intellectually to the world

It is just so completely baffling that he's saying this and filing for an IPO at the same time. Is it cognitive dissonance? Who does he think can stop it besides himself? Just so many questions
Dario Amodei: AI may be uniquely well suited to autocracy and deepening repression.
“We already see it in the kind of surveillance state possible with today’s technology.”
“AI can make individualized propaganda and break into computer systems.”
“It could surveil everyone in a population, detect dissent everywhere and suppress it.”
“You could have a huge army of drones that could go after each individual person.”
“It’s really scary, and we have to stop it.”

The biggest reason for the decline in quality of university discourse even on its own terms is simply that phd students arent being given enough time in grad school to fuck around and go down some dead ends and find a project. They arent being given the space to take risk

If done by a human, this would be a federal crime.
Wait. It was done by a human. His picture is right there in the article.
