On this day 11 years ago in Addis Ababa, the GFF launched on a simple but radical premise: countries must lead, financing must align, and results must follow. Today, that commitment is stronger than ever. The GFF's 2026–2030 investment round opened with $806M in new funding committed on day one — powering the TRANSFORM 2030 strategy to accelerate an end to preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents. A fully funded GFF will deliver twice as fast by 2030. That is what 11 years of evidence, partnership and country ownership makes possible.

How can countries end preventable maternal and child deaths?   At #WHS2026, today’s last keynote session explored the role of country-led financing and proven, low-cost solutions in protecting women, children, and adolescents.   After years of progress, the fight against maternal mortality has stagnated, and climate shocks, conflict, and tight budgets now threaten to reverse the gains. For speakers, the answer starts with countries themselves.   As Inger Ashing, CEO, Save the Children International, emphasized: “Country leadership is not an ingredient among many; it is the foundation that makes all the other ingredients work.”   That leadership also means investing more at home. Luc Laviolette, Head of Secretariat, Global Financing Facility (GFF), highlighted the need for stronger domestic financing: “We need to put in place financial incentives for governments to match domestic resources, shifting dependence away from donors.”   But less dependence should not mean less support. As Catharina Boehme, Deputy Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund, cautioned: “Domestic financing cannot be another word for donor withdrawal.”   👉 Missed the session? During the first week in August every year (August 1–7), the #globalhealth community celebrates #WorldBreastfeedingWeek. Early initiation of breastfeeding, ideally within the first hour of birth, has been shown to reduce neonatal mortality and early infant mortality—in part due to the increased likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding and the optimal nutrition and immunity it provides. Since 2015, the GFF partnership has supported countries to reach 209 million newborns with early initiation of breastfeeding. Here's to millions more . . .

Pakistan's National Health Support Program set out to test a bold idea: that pooling resources and expertise across five partners could tackle systemic health challenges more effectively than any single institution working alone. Led by the federal+provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh, the GFF joined forces with @WorldBankGroup, @gavi, @GlobalFund, and @gatesfoundation to strengthen PHC — using a program-for-results design that ties funding to milestones rather than inputs. Three years in, the results offer real lessons for the future of global health financing and the advantages of integrated, country-led, results-based approaches.
