ALT Pink background. Text: What is it? The tenure track, or the tenure review process, is an academic promotion process (about 5-7 years) that typically provides job security at a university once tenure is obtained. The process begins with first being an assistant professor, then becoming an associate professor, and then a professor. Not all teaching and/or research positions at universities are tenure track. For example, lecturers and adjuncts are not tenure track. (Academic Positions, 2018; Berkeley Career Center, 2022; Watson, 2021

ALT Brown background. Text: What happens? Tenure track faculty are reviewed based on: High-quality teaching grounded in a strong pedagogy. Service, such as working with student and professional organizations, membership on department and university committees, serving as a peer reviewer, and much more. Research and scholarship, especially having consistent publication of academic articles and book chapters. The amount needed varies depending on the program and/or field. It is also expected for tenure-track faculty to regularly present at conferences and symposiums. (Academic Positions, 2018; Watson, 2021)
