What was supposed to be a visit to see family has been opps like this to do psychoeducation & public engagement!

On Saturday, 24th October we delivered our '#Dementia: Detection, Diagnosis and Management' seminar, with Dr. Nadine Mirza @thealmostpsych, for Pakistani psychologists and psychiatrists!

Two things NICE says about assessing memory problems.
First, do not rule out dementia solely because someone scores normally on a cognitive test. NICE also suggests that when a history is taken from someone who knows the person well, it can be supplemented with a structured questionnaire for that person, such as IQCODE.
Second, before referring to a memory clinic, other possible causes of declining memory and thinking should be investigated, including depression, sight or hearing loss, and some medicines.
If you are worried about a relative, tell the GP what you have noticed, and ask for sight, hearing and the medicine list to be checked.

This is also a point we don't discuss often in academia. Global North researchers can access any country in the Global South for their research but the opposite is almost impossible. Even attending a conference is difficult. We don't question this asymmetry enough.

most heartening sight on Basant was seeing women on rooftops flying kites, singing along songs, doing paichay, how women have always been specially in older parts of Lahore. This is our culture, good to see govt encouraging family oriented fun & ensuring safety of women in public

I cannot explain what seeing WOMEN of all ages not just from elite backgrounds having FUN does to me. Mashallah Mashallah. May the women in this country ALWAYS get to have fun and keep smiling always. Our women deserve the world.

Oh I get it, I voluntarily took on too many projects, then voluntarily took on extra projects, then got completely overwhelmed by my projects, and it's somehow my fault?
I went to the emergency room after all my limbs went numb for 30 mins and my GP said I urgently need a CT scan. 10 hours later neurologist saw me, asked about my home life, found out I'm Pakistani and live with my MIL and said it was probably my MIL giving me stress. No scan

Nope. To my non-Muslim friends, during Ramadan, carry on with your daily activities as usual.
We fast willingly and it is we who must bear the challenges of fasting.
During Ramadan,
Please don’t eat in front of Muslims.
Please don’t drink in front of Muslims.
Please don’t try to sell us food or water.
We will be fasting from sunrise to sundown.
I hope you can understand my clear message.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Ramadan teaches personal discipline and respect. The Qur’an states, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256). Fasting is an individual act of worship, not something to impose on others.

I think it’s lovely that we’re all rejoicing in the life of a female novelist who died over 200 years ago. To her detractors I say, with Henry Tilney, “The person ... who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” Jane Austen, you will live forever.

Happy birthday, Jane Austen! 🎂🩷 250 years and we're still not over Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, & one of the best opening lines in all of literature

How is dementia diagnosed? 🧠 This is how it works for most.
1️⃣ PCP appointment → Neuropsychologist & Neurologist. May take 1 week for appointment.
2️⃣ Neuropsychologist → In-depth memory & cognitive testing. May take 2-12 months for appointment.
3️⃣ Neurologist → Brain imaging & lab tests to rule out medical causes. May take 2-6 months for appointment.
4️⃣ Diagnosis → Based on test results + medical findings = treatment plan
Treatment and intervention plans vary depending on age, severity of presentation, and testing results. People are often surprised that this process can take months and there is no one "professional" who is specifically in charge of having a "plan" and that most professionals do not actively collaborate or talk to each other.
What is not needed to diagnosis dementia? fMRI and PET scans are not required so be careful and ask questions if these are recommended.
