Diplomacy at its best
The UK and Oman share almost 400 years of friendship.
The State Visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik enshrines this as a partnership for the future.
Good to meet @badralbusaidi to reaffirm our work together, including on education, investment and regional stability.

On the morning of 19 July 1972, around 400 communist insurgents launched a surprise attack on the Omani coastal town of Mirbat, opening up with a mortar bombardment before advancing towards the defenders.
Arrayed against them were just nine soldiers from Britain's Special Air Service (SAS), commanded by Captain Mike Kealy, a contingent of Omani troops, and local fighters. This tiny garrison was outnumbered four to one.

Back in ‘98 is an ode to the historic relationship between Oman and the UK. In 1798 the Anglo-Omani Treaty was signed, this followed a commercial agreement with the British East India Company 150 years earlier. The 1798 Treaty is considered foundational to the relationship of friendship and commerce which continues to this day.

A Bridge to Muscat. I wrote this song in celebration of two interconnected events. First, the opening of an EU permanent mission in Muscat. Second, His Majesty Sultan Haitham's State Visit to the UK next week. Both events reflect a deep friendship between Europe and Oman which, while centuries old, has more geopolitical relevance today than ever.

Indeed a historic partnership, the first treaty between UK and Oman was signed in 1647!

Pleased to see @MiguelMoratinos, High Representative for the @UNAOC, in New York.
We reviewed Oman’s cooperation with the Alliance in promoting dialogue and rejecting hate speech, violence, antisemitism and Islamophobia. We also discussed the #MuscatPlan to strengthen social cohesion and turn tolerance and mutual respect into practical programmes for peaceful coexistence.

Perhaps His Majesty Sultan Haitham and Oman are to small states, what Mark Carney and Canada are to middle powers. Leading with a clear and sensible vision for how each group can survive and thrive in this new emerging global order.

Very good to see this reaffirmation of an exceptionally long and close relationship, especially at a time when Oman's constructive neutrality and indispensable regional mediation is coming under such sustained political attack from opponents of conflict resolution in the Gulf.
