Weekend listeners get their directions from Maps. Maps is James Chapman. While many artists went introspective during pandemic lockdown, he decided to synthesize joy. We talk about it this weekend on Echoes from PRX. wp.me/p4ZE0X-u4B

Also squeezed on is @talktopeters’ version of ‘Jingle Bells’. I love how Mark can take any old song and turn it Into something stunning that sounds like a long-lost cross between the Durutti Column and Spiritualized. Gorgeous.

On the flip is @younghusband1’s short and sweet cover of Margo Guryan’s ‘I Don’t Intend To Spend Christmas Without You’. I've always regretted not giving this one the release it deserved, rather than hiding a download code in a mince pie, so here it is.

The A-side is a new edit of @thisismaps’ stunning cover of East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and to my ears the definitive version of this non-festive Christmas classic. (Sorry, Tony Mortimer.)

Our 4CD boxset ‘Celebrate Yourself! The Sonic Cathedral Story 2004-2024’ is out this Friday (December 6) and the fourth disc is hilariously titled ‘Celebrate Your Elf!’.
Shoegaze is for life, not just for Christmas.
