We focus on the recent addition (Jan 2024) of tramadol in WADA's Prohibited List and discuss its rationale at the intersection of anti-doping policy and public health justification.
These tensions arise, we argue, because of unresolved issues in sports medicine, where athletes find themselves in a position of vulnerability where health and health optimitization goals and optimal sport performance goals cannot always be reconciled.
In this editorial, where we merge her expertise in bioethics of sport and mine in sport science, we describe how elite sport is a context where unique tensions emerge regarding the management of pain.
