In 1969, Salvador Dali was captured strolling through a Paris subway station with his beloved anteater. At the age of 65, Dali's fascination with anteaters had developed, partially in response to his fellow surrealist André Breton, who was humorously referred to as "le tamanoir" or "the anteater" by his surrealistic peers.
Years after Breton's poem "After the Giant Anteater" was published, Dali began to sketch anteater-like figures, dedicating one of these sketches to Breton. This particular sketch became a series of bookplates, which Breton affixed to the pages of several books in his personal library, collectively known as "The Anteater."
Here's an intriguing tidbit about Dali's early career as an artist: rather than paying his secretaries, he compensated them with royalties. Remarkably, some of these secretaries eventually cashed in their royalties for millions of dollars.
