"Free Markets and Firepower" - my new Substack

Joined October 2009
Tim Starr is an autodidact writer and independent thinker exploring the deep interplay between **economic liberty** and **military defense**. Through his Substack, *Free Markets and Firepower*, he examines how free markets generate prosperity while credible firepower secures the conditions for liberty to thrive—rejecting both naive pacifism and unchecked statism. His essays blend rigorous historical analysis, counterfactual reasoning, and libertarian principles, tackling topics like the true drivers of the Industrial Revolution, WWII logistics and American power, the role of public goods in a free society, critiques of influential libertarian theorists, and the necessity of strategic strength in an imperfect world. On X (@timstarr2001), Tim delivers sharp, no-holds-barred commentary on foreign policy, individual rights, historical myths, and current events—always grounded in incentives, evidence, and a clear-eyed defense of freedom against ideological capture or folly. A long-time observer of ideas and power, he values systems that align incentives with reality: markets for creation, resolve for protection. Follow him for thoughtful takes that treat liberty as a practical achievement, not a slogan.

In 1944, an 18 year old American Marine walked into Japanese territory almost entirely alone. He was just 5 feet 4 inches tall, spoke imperfect Japanese, and carried a weapon the enemy never expected: the language he'd learned growing up in Los Angeles. On one extraordinary day, he persuaded roughly 800 Japanese to surrender. This is the story of Guy Gabaldon.. 🧵1/5

Rothbard blamed Britain for getting us into WWI & WWII, then blamed Israel for getting us into wars in the Middle East after the Israeli War of Independence. He literally said that in every war of the 20th century America and Britain were in the wrong, or more wrong, than any of our enemies. He blamed Israel for the Six Day War. And, of course, he blamed us for the Cold War, too. Rothbard blamed us (America & Britain) for WWI, WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Falklands War, the IRA's campaign against the UK, etc. Of course, Germany started WWI, WWII (with Japan), Stalin started the Cold War, the Communists (North Korea, Soviets, & Red China) started the Korean War & the Vietnam War (North Vietnam instead of North Korea), Argentina started the Falklands War, the IRA (with Soviet backing) started the Troubles, etc. He blamed Britain for Germany's invasion of Poland, and even blamed Finland for its invasion by the Soviets. Rothbard made DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) his only method of foreign policy analysis. He had a perfect record of claiming the exact opposite of the truth in these matters. There isn't a totalitarian regime whose propaganda he wasn't willing to parrot approvingly on this, whether it be Hitler's, Stalin's, Kim Il-Sung's, Ho Chi Minh's, Nasser's, the Junta's, etc. I've never seen any Rothbardian make the argument you cite about American economic might making us secure enough to withdraw from the rest of the world. Instead, his followers adhere with absolute loyalty to his demented foreign policy positions.

Every modern upgrade to wool is wool's job done worse, by oil, with a brand name on it. Fleece. What it is: polyester, the same stuff as the bottle. Why it exists: because wool is warm, and the bottle wanted the contract. Gore-Tex. What it is: a PTFE film, a forever chemical, glued to nylon. Why it exists: because wool shed rain and breathed for ten thousand years, and the film does both for about a season before it wets out. Thinsulate. What it is: polyester and polypropylene fluff with a trademark. Why it exists: because down and wool insulate, and oil needed a word. Moisture-wicking. What it is: a fibre that cannot absorb water at all. Why it exists: because wool takes in a third of its weight and still feels dry, polyester cannot, so the failure was renamed a feature. Odour-control base layers. What it is: polyester with silver sprayed on. Why it exists: because polyester stinks after four hours and wool does not, and the silver washes into the river by the third wash. Flame-retardant finish. What it is: a chemical bath, replaced every decade when the last one turns out to be carcinogenic. Why it exists: because polyester melts at 250 degrees and wool will not burn in ordinary air. Merino blend. What it is: half wool, half nylon. Why it exists: so the label can say merino and the price can say wool while the jumper is half plastic. Vegan wool. What it is: acrylic. Why it exists: because a sheep had to be left out of a jumper on principle, and the oil well was fine. Recycled polyester. What it is: the same plastic, from a bottle, shedding the same fibres. Why it exists: so the jumper can be sold as a good deed. Bamboo. What it is: viscose, which is wood pulp dissolved in carbon disulphide. Why it exists: because a plant on the label sells, and the factory downstream does not. Every one of those exists to add back a property wool came with, and every one adds a chemical, a smell, a fire or a plastic in the sea to do it. The sheep did the lot at once, on a hill, for grass, and the industry has spent eighty years selling you the parts.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar writes in her memoir, “I was eight years old when civil war broke out in Somalia. One day everything was okay, and the next, there were bullets piercing not only buildings but also people.” While Somalia has suffered several civil wars, the chapter is entitled, “War: 1989-1991, Mogadishu, Somalia.” Mogadishu experienced severe riots in July 1989, including a mass execution that became known as the “Jazeera beach massacre.” If, in her own words in her own autobiography, Omar was eight when this occurred in 1989, then she was born in 1981, and was 19 years old in the year 2000, when her father purportedly obtained his citizenship, not 1982 as she currently claims.

Ayanle Siad Barre, 61, the son of former Somali dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, is living in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, more than three decades after his father’s regime collapsed. Historian Mohamed Haji Ingiriis describes Ayanle as his father’s former “right-hand man” and says he headed the administration during the dictatorship’s final years. Siad Barre seized power in a Soviet-backed coup in 1969 and ruled Somalia until he was overthrown in 1991. His regime has been accused of ethnic cleansing, torture, mass executions, indiscriminate bombing and other atrocities, particularly against the Isaaq population. Survivors described civilians being massacred, cities bombed and bodies dumped into mass graves. Ayanle and his sister Deka arrived in the United States shortly after their father was overthrown. Deka and her late husband ran Vanguard Home Health Care in Ohio, which received more than $1.8 million in Medicare funding.

100% true. And imagine this: the dictator’s son lives in Ohio!
"Between 1960 and 1991, the government of Somalia killed hundreds of thousands of people in the region known as Somaliland in northeast Somalia. Most belonged to the Isaaq ethnic group, the predominant identity group in the area. The perpetrators deployed sophisticated, deliberate and systematically planned and executed campaign of genocide. A campaign designed to depopulate Somaliland of its majority Isaaq people. The Genocide policy was allegedly documented in Somalia’s official genocide document: ‘The Final Solution to the Isaaq Problem’. Somalia used its air force, army and navy to flatten Somaliland’s largest cities, poisoned its wells, aerially bombard cities and critical infrastructure, strafed fleeing civilians, use rape as a weapon of war, use man-made famine as a weapon of war, impose a naval and economic blockade, impose a 15 year state of emergency and curfew, and lay more than a million mines in civilian areas." Nur Omar Mohamed was "an esteemed senior officer in the Somali National Army" from the late 1970s to 1991, when he fled the country with his daughter... Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

The China Trap, Part II: The Contingency That Makes Delay Deadly More than two thousand years ago a Chinese statesman named Guan Zhong showed how to defeat a rival without a battle. He economically induced the people of a neighboring state to abandon growing grain for silk, then he cut off the trade. Famine followed, they starved because they relied on trade that was really meant as deadly treachery, so they submitted to being ruled by their enemy without firing a shot. The method has been refined by the Chinese since, but the logic is unchanged: create dependence, then withhold what has become essential. The United States, out of greed and lack of clarity, has allowed itself to become so very dependent on China that now, “China holds all the cards.” Pharmaceutical precursors are the clearest civilian case. China supplies a large share of the key starting materials and active ingredients for antibiotics, insulin, high bp meds, and countless other essential drugs. A deliberate interruption does not require a formal embargo announcement. Shipments will simply stop. Within weeks, infections that are now routine become lethal for the immunocompromised, the elderly, the wounded, children with common illnesses. Daily deaths will accumulate, even within the military, while service members grieve dying family members. The side that holds the medicines can wait as long as it takes to kill as many Americans as it wants, through infection, diabetes, high blood pressure, incapacitating pain and myriad illnesses that now need Chinese drug precursors, even if made in India or elsewhere. China holds almost all the precursors cards. A very canny, long-term plan to murder us without firing one shot, simply stop the shipments, and we fell for it out of short-term thinking greed. Hospitals are already deep in the same trap. China supplies the majority of the basic medical consumables that keep an American hospital functioning—nitrile gloves, syringes, catheters, gauze, masks, and a large share of other disposable supplies. A cutoff does not require exotic equipment to fail. It means the everyday items used for every injection, every wound, every procedure simply stop arriving. Stockpiles run out in days or weeks. Care collapses while the drug shortages are already killing people. The military dependencies are equally awful and direct. China processes roughly 90 percent of the world’s rare earths and produces the large majority of the permanent magnets required for modern weapons. An F-35 contains hundreds of kilograms of these materials; a destroyer or submarine can require several metric tons. Heat-resistant magnets appear in missile guidance systems, electric actuators, and aircraft components. Unclassified wargames show that U.S. munitions inventories could be largely exhausted in three to four weeks of high-intensity conflict, with certain critical munitions lasting only days. Replenishment takes years. Defense contractors have disclosed that they use Chinese “content,” Chinese parts in their supply chains. Defense contractors are depending on parts for military equipment they build to fight the same people that they need to supply the parts. Did they never think, “Come war with China we won’t be able to build our military equipment?” Greed over national defense. This is insanity beyond anything seen in previous warfare planning, perhaps by any previous civilization. And congressional mandates to eliminate such an obvious military vulnerability have deadlines they simply and quietly keep extending, and domestic refining and magnet capacity remains limited. Gallium and germanium are in the same category. China dominates refined supply. These materials are required for gallium-nitride radar, infrared optics, secure communications, and certain advanced semiconductors. Export restrictions have already been applied by China. Propellant precursors, particularly nitrocellulose, constrain ammunition production once stocks are drawn down. Legacy and specialized semiconductors, together with related battery materials such as graphite, appear in defense electronics and platforms. A cutoff by China does not stop every weapon overnight, but it constrains repair, replenishment, and the production of systems that rely on these inputs. It boggles the mind that the United States basically handed its military capacity & the health of Americans to China. President Trump has already moved on parts of this. In April 2026 he issued Proclamation 11020 under Section 232, imposing tariffs on certain patented pharmaceuticals and their ingredients and tying lower rates to company onshoring plans. In July 2026 he signed an executive order directing the Department of War to tighten waivers for critical materials from China and other covered nations, require supply-chain mapping, and push defense contractors toward alternative sources or face contract consequences. These steps raise costs for some firms. They do not reach most generic drug importers, they do not cover the full range of hospital consumables, and a new president of either party can revoke or simply stop enforcing both of them the day he takes office. That is why Congress has to act now. A single comprehensive statute is required. It must: • Designate the essential chains—pharmaceutical precursors and APIs, rare-earth magnets, gallium and germanium, nitrocellulose and other propellant chemistry, specialized semiconductors, and the basic hospital consumables (gloves, syringes, catheters, gauze, masks)—and set fixed onshoring deadlines for each. • Attach automatic, escalating civil penalties and exclusion from all federal procurement to any company, including generic importers and ordinary commercial suppliers, that misses those deadlines. The penalties must apply whether or not the company holds a defense contract. • Create personal civil and, where appropriate, criminal liability for executives who knowingly continue reliance past the deadlines or who falsify onshoring reports. • Direct the Secretary of War and the Secretary of Health and Human Services to maintain a continuously updated list of the specific production, export, and logistics nodes for these chains so that response options can be pre-targeted. These provisions have to be in statute, passed by Congress. Executive orders will not survive a change in president. At the same time, the National Command Authority must pre-clear the response packages that will execute the moment a deliberate stoppage of any of those chains is confirmed. “Military packages” means the concrete, pre-written sets of orders, authorities, authentication procedures, and targeting lists already held by the National Command Authority and the combatant commands. Once the decision is made, the forces do not have to invent the response while people are dying & military capabilities degrading. They are written now and held for immediate authentication by presidential order (or the lawful successor). They include: • Orders to seize or freeze Chinese-owned companies, real estate, and financial assets inside the United States. • Orders to halt all U.S. and allied food and agricultural exports to China and to interdict Chinese food imports and distribution nodes where feasible. • Conventional strike packages against Chinese food storage, processing, and port infrastructure. • Pre-written financial and cyber measures against the entities that control the interrupted chains. • Orders to restrict or interdict China’s energy imports—oil, liquefied natural gas, and refined products—through allied cooperation or naval presence at key chokepoints. • Interdiction of specific high-value or dual-use maritime cargoes and denial of access to key straits under defined conditions. • Seizure or denial of Chinese overseas port and infrastructure investments once hostilities are declared. • Expanded export-control orders covering the semiconductor tools, software, and materials China still depends on for its own advanced manufacturing. • Nuclear options pre-packaged for rapid authentication if the conventional packages are blocked or the chain of command is already degraded. They can be written and pre-cleared now so that they do not depend on fresh legislation or contested court orders while daily deaths accumulate & weapons systems degrade. The contingency does not require an automatic nuclear launch. It requires that the authorities, authentication procedures, and targeting packages already exist so that delay itself is no longer the default. Showing China that these packages are ready changes the calculation before any shipment stops. Beijing can no longer assume that Washington will fiddle for weeks while Americans die and conventional stocks run down. The visible existence of pre-cleared orders, targeting lists, and authorities signals that the first confirmed stoppage will be met with immediate costs—on food, energy, assets, maritime trade, and export revenue—rather than with debate. That demonstration of readiness is itself a deterrent. It raises the price of the waiting strategy while there is still time for China to choose a different course. Reindustrialization will not close the gap on any realistic timeline. Profit incentives and the absence of sustained urgency have kept capacity offshore. CEOs of pharmaceuticals and defense industry companies think of profits before national security. Profits before American lives and our country’s freedom. Allies have shown little appetite for the costs of rapid diversification. So we can count them out. Once China decides to stop exporting what we need to survive even a normal infection, or to keep hospitals open, or to build weapons, what then? Washington, DC will begin to fiddle as our children burn with fevers. Courts and contested authority will consume time. Our residual nuclear forces remain the instruments that do not depend on Chinese components, but they are usable only while the chain of command and the people who operate them remain intact. There will be havoc in government as there will be on the streets. The first confirmed stoppage by China is therefore the moment at which we must act. The waiting strategy must be made expensive now, or the window closes on us Americans, both medically and militarily. Congress must pass the statute that creates the onshoring mandates and the automatic penalties before any cutoff begins. The military packages/orders that seize Chinese assets, cut off food and energy exports, interdict maritime trade, and strike Chinese food and energy infrastructure must be written and pre-cleared now, so that they do not depend on fresh legislation or contested court orders while daily American deaths accumulate. The industrial timelines do not change. We will not be magically producing the capacity we’ve given away without tightening costs to CEOs, and we need to put China on clear notice. Those two concrete steps: 1. A statute that forces onshoring, with automatic penalties and personal liability that survive a change in president. 2. Pre-cleared orders, ready for immediate authentication, that seize Chinese assets, cut food and energy flows, and strike the related infrastructure the day a deliberate stoppage is confirmed. Sending a clear signal to China that they already exist is what removes China’s free use of time while Americans die.

In 1947, the year the Nuremberg Code ruled that nobody could be experimented on without consent, Canada began cutting the milk of Indigenous schoolchildren to a third of what they needed, and the man who designed the experiment went on to write the national food guide. His name was Lionel Pett, and he was the government's top nutritionist. The children were at the Alberni Indian Residential School on Vancouver Island, taken from their families by law. They were already malnourished when the scientists arrived. The scientists decided that was useful. The recommended amount of milk for a growing child was 24 ounces a day. The Alberni children were given 8, and kept on 8 for two years, so the researchers would have a baseline to measure against. When some of the children in the study were given extra vitamins and minerals, others were deliberately given none, as controls. The government dental service was told not to treat the children's teeth, because dental care would spoil the results. Benson Nookemus left Alberni in 1947 after five years there, already losing his teeth. "We were always hungry," he said. The children raided the school garden at night and ate raw potatoes and carrots out of the ground. Alberni was one of six residential schools and a string of Cree communities in northern Manitoba used in the same programme between 1942 and 1952. About 1,300 Indigenous people were studied, around 1,000 of them children. The scientists put the hunger they found down to what they called shiftlessness, indolence, improvidence and inertia. Nobody outside the archives knew any of this until a food historian called Ian Mosby found the files and published in 2013. Several of the children were still alive to read it. Pett became the main author of Canada's Food Guide, the chart that told generations of Canadian families what to put on a child's plate. He knew, better than any man in the country, exactly what a child looks like after two years on a third of the milk. He had the photographs.

Chinese state media says a Japanese TV drama is “cognitive warfare.” The same media ecosystem produces anti-Japan war dramas by the dozen. CCTV, then Global Times, condemned Season 2 of TBS’s hit spy thriller VIVANT, which premiered July 26 with an 18.8% rating, the highest of any Japanese drama this year. In it, an unofficial Self-Defense Forces intelligence unit is kidnapped by a Chinese secret organization that tortures its members, including cutting off fingers. Season 1 used a fictional country. This time, the enemy is named: China. Chinese outlets say the torture mirrors what the Imperial Japanese Army did to Chinese fighters in WWII, accusing the show of “grafting” Japanese atrocities onto modern Chinese people. They also say it glorifies Japanese overseas operations and pushes a “China threat” narrative, calling it “cognitive poisoning” packaged as entertainment. They noted that Prime Minister Takaichi said she’s been recording it to binge over New Year’s. Some Japanese critics share part of the concern, arguing the show fabricates Chinese torture of Japanese agents and risks stoking anti-China sentiment. Japanese social media mostly went the other way. Many pointed to the long list of Chinese films and dramas depicting Japanese atrocities and called the complaint hypocritical, while others shrugged it off as standard thriller violence. The topic trended on Weibo and Bilibili. No diplomatic response has followed.

Welcome to the Third Rome, Holy Rus!
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) has officially mandated the rebaptism of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians and banned them the use of the Ukrainian language in divine services. On October 22, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church approved a document titled "Guidelines for the Reception of Individuals from Ukrainian Schismatic Structures Wishing to Join the Russian Orthodox Church." It applies to people in Russian-occupied territories who were previously affiliated with the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP), or the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). The document outlines three procedures for joining the ROC. Notably, it stipulates that individuals baptized within the OCU, UOC-KP, or UAOC must undergo the Sacrament of Baptism again to join the ROC. Different rules apply to those originally baptized within the ROC, the Roman Catholic Church, or a Protestant denomination. Regarding the accession of entire congregations to the ROC, the document states that such a community may not demand a distinct liturgical order or a special administrative status. Furthermore, the use of any language other than Church Slavonic in divine services is prohibited—even though the ROC elsewhere permits the use of various other languages, ranging from English to Japanese.
