One of the best things about remote work is getting to see my 2yo son throughout the day and play with him as soon as I’m done. Working at the office or commuting would take some of that away. There’s always more work, but they’re only this young once.

There is no level of expertise at which going back to the basics is unhelpful. My graduate advisor who was a world-renowned scientist in his field used to, once or twice a week, open an undergraduate textbook to a random page and study it for hours. He always saw new things.

Ibland saknar verkligheten karta. Saktfärdighet riskerar skada oss i skarpa lägen.

What follows from this is that we skeptical of those who say that problems need ‘holistic solutions’. In the real world, problems are solved incrementally; various imperfect steps in the right direction.

I find Russell Ackoff's concept of idealized design extremely interesting, but seldom hear of it in practice. I suspect the details of it got lost, as details often do. Some of the rules that I've used to help with change in companies:

2) You design for the part of "the system" you control. Systems thinking can be paralyzing in revealing complexity. So: "dig where you stand"/do what you CAN do.

3) So, point 2 was actually a constraint on the idealized design. One more constraint: no science fiction. It's pointless to design in something that will not (at least in our lifetime) be available.

Today's #uglyinfographic speculates around the eternal question "Is #agile/#Scrum/#kanban/#lean/… good or bad?" I included the moral of the story in the bottom corner just to be sure.

This is not a terrible idea, if you view it as a tool for better meetings by making speaking imbalances clear. It reminds me of this experiment in VR designed to make you aware of conversational imbalances by having the words you speak literally pile up at your feet.

Nothing has increased my programming productivity more than being able to restate hard problems as simple ones. Nobody taught me more about how to do that than the late, great Gerald M. Weinberg. amazon.com/Are-Your-Lights-F…
