Not only was his “9 fingers” insult a major political blunder, as hundreds of thousands of working Brazilians have suffered workplace accidents of some kind, being disrespectful towards the elderly is a major turn-off in Ibero-American culture and Flavio’s so much younger.
The Vargas x Lula comparisons are unwarranted. Lula is a giant of contemporary politics but Varguismo (and its dark twin, the military dictatorship) founded modern Brazil. The New Republic as a project is, at the end of the day, an escape *from* Vargas.
Glorious day in Manhattan. Getting ready to mail in my vote for the midterms. All is well in the world.
Had Frota forced his way into succeeding Geisel in 1977, Brazil's regime could easily have lasted into the 1990s. Only two 20th-century dictatorships gave up power while still able to keep it: military Brazil and apartheid South Africa.
A final observation before I dash to Queens College to vote:
Brazil will not return to normality until it confronts a growing cancer. Rio must be restored. Otherwise it will become a black hole, pulling the whole country into itself. In many ways, it already has.
I'm a social democrat by conviction, but I believe it's essential to understand the Right on its own terms: what it wants, what its project is, and what kind of society it sees as ideal. /3
I see the current iteration of the Far Right as a break from that pattern. Is there any desideratum here beyond revenge, plunder? It claims to seek alignment w/ DC, yet it fundamentally misunderstands America, both as a country and as a hegemon. /5
Brazil's successful conservative projects were all led by men of real talent. The Marquis of Paraná was a master statesman. The state he served just happened to be a deeply evil polity, a slaveholding empire. /1
Japan's ~200k Brazilians are a distinct community: many are of Japanese descent, work in factories, and a notable share have turned evangelical over the past 20 years.
Brazilians in China, Singapore and Korea are mostly expats, adventurers and researchers. Very different demos.

Any thinking person on the Latin American right needs to understand how powerful Lula is, as both a political figure and a symbol. He is what the social-democratic left spent a century chasing: the organic worker-politician.
