Mathematicians like myself often work long hours in isolation. This has the effect of making you feel like you are alone, even if you know intellectually you are not. Going to a conference, giving a talk, listening to talks, chatting with colleagues, serves as a quick reminder you are not a solitary explorer

My only opinion on the whole Oxford-PhD fiasco is a milquetoast take which should be uncontroversial: All education from kindergarten to Masters should be 100% free for everyone, and Doctoral research should be recognised for what it is- productive labour. Therefore, all doctoral

I just received copies of my book!! Hot off the press!! While my excitement is tempered by endless crises, I’m continually inspired by those who work to both interpret the world and fight to change it.

I don't cry easily, but as the dad of a teenage son with autism, ADHD & anxiety issues, watching Tim Walz's 17-year-old son(who has a non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD & anxiety disorder)standing up, crying & pointing to the stage telling everyone "that's my dad" just gutted me

Watching from afar I wondered why Gov Walz seemed such an attractive figure; to my mind he reminds me of the sort of character James Stewart would play in a Frank Capra movie. He triggers that unusual, almost subconscious, nostalgic, feeling that you are seeing a good man.

4:21 PM PT -- A source who has spoken with a member of the Secret Service tells TMZ, Trump was not hit by a bullet. Rather, a bullet hit his teleprompter and the GLASS struck him by the ear.

I will do all that I can to see that President Biden is re-elected.
Why?
Despite my disagreements with him, he has been the most effective president in the modern history of our country and is the strongest candidate to defeat Donald Trump — a demagogue and pathological liar.

Paul Pelosi survived an assassination attempt, Trump mocked it.
Biden called Trump to make sure he's ok. That's the difference.

Google's Gemini is not a ChatGPT killer.
But it's potential for academic writers is much better.
Especially with Google Scholar integration.
Here's why I think that is:
I recently made a prompt.
I asked Gemini for references to the most cited papers on a topic I know well.
I needed to put "literature search" and "references" in my prompt. This made it actually search the literature instead of telling me how to do it.
The most striking thing was that it didn't default to Semantic Scholar. All the other GenAIs currently on the market do.
It queried Google Scholar and Web of Science.
Those two are the most used search engines for academic papers. This is a game-changer for academics.
Then, it also allows you to quickly check responses.
Yes, that's what that little Google icon is for.
This will then conduct a Google search and check your results.
Green means that it's confident about your result.
In this case, we could feel confident that the citation is correct.
But it's even easier to verify the source. You can find where the source PDF was by clicking.
That makes checking citations easy. That is, for academics who know the field.
Even the orange-marked fields are not wrong. However, those have to be checked manually. The Google search did not find any direct link.
Gemini's accuracy is more promising right off the bat than ChatGPT.
We will see what happens in 2 months.
Google will integrate everything into its ecosystem.
So, how do you feel about the new Gemini?
Have you used it for academic writing?
