More than 60 children a week are being strip-searched by police in England and Wales, with those who are black, Asian or mixed race significantly more likely to be targeted, new figures reveal.
Data from 41 out of 43 police forces shows that 3,122 searches were carried out on under-18s in the year to March 2023. In total, 68,874 strip searches were carried out. For children, a far higher proportion of those strip-searched self-defined as being black or mixed race compared with adults - 37% compared with 19%. Only about half of all children strip-searched were white, compared with 71% of strip-searched adults.
Labour's home secretary, Yvette Cooper, said: "These figures reinforce the need for an urgent, comprehensive review of the way police powers are being used and whether safeguards are in place. In government, we would ensure that new mandatory rules and safeguards on the stripsearching of children are put in place as a matter of urgency."

Transcriptions of open criminal court proceedings should really be available to all: victim, defendant, media, public. This would be the simplest method of realising open justice in it's truest form. I record all my university lectures and all are auto transcribed. 1/3
This quoted post is unavailable.
However, accurate transcriptions require everything said to be properly captured by recording devices. There is a mic right by me for lectures. Courts are not the same. There remains a significant problem with audibility in courts - particularly for hybrid proceedings. 2/3

Spent today in Westminster talking to MPs and Journo’s. Thanks for your support. what I really want is @UKLabour putting their money where their mouths are. Back the call for #OpenJusticeForAll - free access to judges summing up and sentencing. @ShabanaMahmood @OpenJustice4All

Your reminder that both Tories + @UKLabour are REFUSING to support victims/survivors calls to erase the exploitative costs of access court transcripts.
One rape survivor was quoted £7,500 for the transcript of her trial, another £22,000.
This harms victims + denies justice ⬇️

As suspected, it appears there has been little positive change in relation to the "limbo" of pre charge bail and RUI - as was argued by @roxanna_law @DrDanielNewman and myself last year
