Essentially it is about switching liability from the individual to the state. Same care, but paid for by the public funding. If we want better (and more) care, that’s a very different conversation requiring even higher spending. Few would say the quality of care right now is good enough.

Important to remember that the debate around social care right now is about *free* care - ending the lottery of life that means some are financially ruined by care costs as they age. It is not about providing *better* care, which would require spending of another order…

There are around 100 people here. 7 of them have red T shirts. This is approximately the ratio of Brits who voted to leave the EU because they were worried about immigration. The ones in blue did not and were not.

If a 25-year-old should be free to live and work in Europe... Why shouldn't a 45-year-old? Or a 65-year-old? Freedom doesn't stop being freedom because you had another birthday.

Care does not begin in hospitals. It begins in communities with families, neighbours and a shared responsibility to uphold dignity. This belief shaped 'Strengthening Community Palliative Care – A Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue', a hybrid convening by @Helpageindia at Tamaraikulam Elders Village, Cuddalore - a senior care home established after the tsunami, rooted in resilience, collective care and ageing with dignity. In his reflections, Dr. M.R. Rajagopal, widely regarded as the father of palliative care in India, reminded us that when care is removed from community and context, it risks becoming clinical but incomplete. If care addresses pain but ignores hunger, loneliness, unsafe shelter or loss of dignity, he noted, then we are not truly caring. He also challenged the misconception that palliative care is expensive or unscalable. Drawing on The Lancet Commission, Dr. Rajagopal pointed out that in low- and middle-income countries, an essential package of palliative care costs just 0.6% of Universal Health Coverage expenditure. Strengthening community palliative care, he argued, is therefore not a question of affordability but of values, policy intent and implementation. For people working at a locality level, understanding local data on ageing can help to build a picture of how well people are ageing in your area, and identify priority areas for improvement. Our new report, 'Create Your Own Themed Report: Understanding Ageing in Your Area' with LG Inform has identified trusted statistics available at the English local authority level which align with the eight domains of age-friendly communities. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse factors that contribute to how a place influences its residents experience of ageing – from housing tenure to welfare, employment, loneliness and health markers. It aims to save localities time and provide a national benchmark – and will be continually updated for local areas to track changes over time. Culture is important because it determines how your work is delivered — it directly affects business success as well as employee engagement. We recently ran our 'What is an 'Age-friendly Culture' and how do we know if we have one?' webinar, where we discussed how ageism might show up in the workplace, and what employers can do to help combat it. Find out more from our Age-friendly Employer Pledge here: ageing-better.org.uk/employe… #OlderEmployers #OlderEmployees #AgeFriendly #Ageing #WorkplaceCulture

Ageing Without Children (AWOC) is now in Dorset Council’s delivery strategy. Around 1 in 5 of adults in Dorset are AWOC - over 23,000 people. Older adults without family advocacy are more likely to rely on paid care, face longer hospital stays and earlier care Home entry. #AWOC

Delighted that supporting those Ageing Without Children has now been included in Dorset Council’s planning. I think we might be the first county to do this - in the world! #awoc

Older people are nearly invisible in humanitarian response: just 0.1% of project titles and 6.5% of descriptions mention them. Our new study shows why closing this gap is vital for stronger, inclusive crisis planning in an ageing world. ow.ly/tgcO50X6TPv

I’m concerned about pharmacy access across Dorset—especially for older & vulnerable residents. As chair of Health & Wellbeing Board, I challenged providers: a 20-min drive isn’t good enough. I’ve called for a report with not just challenges, but solutions. #AgeFriendlyDorset

Last week we were proud to host the launch of the Supporting Disabled Older Workers (SDOW) project final report. In partnership with @policyatkings at @KingsCollegeLon, the SDOW project sets out new approaches to supporting Disabled people and people with long-term health conditions in their 50s and 60s to find and stay in work. At the centre of the event were the Experts by Experience Steering Group, who reflected on their role in shaping the project, from helping to select our research partner, to interpreting data, to conducting peer research themselves. We were also pleased to welcome Sir @stephenctimms, Minister for Social Security and Disability, who acknowledged the challenges ahead and outlined the government’s plans to address them. Colleagues from across policy, research, and practice added their perspectives to a lively discussion. Stephen Timms, Minister for Social Security and Disability, said: “For too long people who deserve to be in good, secure jobs have been denied the support they need, and it was great to see how the Centre for Ageing Better are exploring fresh approaches to address this. “We are taking action to get Britain back to health and into work by giving people the skills and opportunities to succeed. Our record £3.8bn of employment support comes alongside our plan to boost employment for people of all ages by overhauling Jobcentres and providing personalised work and skills support.” The final report is now live on our website - read it here: ageing-better.org.uk/resourc… #OlderWorkers #DisabledWorkers #Ageing #Age #OlderAge
