Great to see PM @MarkJCarney appointing Louise Arbour, a global human rights leader and distinguished former judge, to be the new Governor General of Canada. It's a public reminder that Canada still holds high the banner of human rights. nytimes.com/2026/05/05/world…
Excellent choice
I am very pleased to announce that, on my recommendation, His Majesty has approved the appointment of the Honourable Louise Arbour as the 31st Governor General of Canada. Across more than five decades, she gave voice to those whose dignity was denied, held institutions to account, and changed lives through her service.
As Canada’s next Governor General, Louise Arbour will represent the best of Canada to our citizens and to the world — a Canada clear-eyed about the challenges we face, and steadfast in the values we uphold.

We have lost touch with our colleagues in Gaza.
I’m extremely concerned about their safety and another night of unspeakable horror for 1M children in #Gaza.
All humanitarians and the children and families they serve MUST be protected.

Russia says Yevgeny Prigozhin was on a plane that crashed on a flight from Moscow to St Petersburg. All passengers and e crew, are dead.
Wagner-linked channels say Russian air defense *shot down the plane* – the same private jet Prigozhin regularly uses.

This is a thread about why Afghan women should be invited to a meeting the @UN @antonioguterres will host next week about Afghanistan.
The Taliban, after seizing power in Aug 2021, stripped women/girls of most rights. Women fought back. #GenderApartheid

Thinking of #Sudan and wishing peace. Women and men marched, protested, demanded, and overthrew a regime to have peace. Their hopes of democracy were dashed by military coup, economic decline, and political instability. And now more.
All flights at Sudan's Khartoum Airport are canceled as the army battles the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The US, UK & other foreign embassies are asking their citizens to shelter in place.
US Secretary of State calls it a "fragile" situation. Our update on CNN

What is happening in Tenn. with @brotherjones_ & @Justinjpearson shows that the fight for U.S. democracy was not resolved in the last election, that what can't be done at the federal level will be executed in the state house. These are end of Reconstruction,Jim Crow-era tactics.

The #Afghan de facto authority's decision to ban women Afghan staff from working for the @UN, including @UNICEF, is unconscionable.
It's another affront to women’s fundamental rights and further undermines life-saving work for children across the country.

This thread. US life expectancy lags because of young deaths.😢
“More years of American lives were erased by drugs, guns & road deaths in 2021 alone than from Covid”
~“Beyond 70, US mortality/survival rates =~other rich countries. Between teenage & early middle age.. vast gulf”
Replying to @jburnmurdoch
Time for perhaps the most damning stat of all:
One in 25 American five-year-olds today will not make it to their 40th birthday.
No parent should ever have to bury their child, but on average across the US one set of parents from every kindergarten class most likely will.
