Just because I’ve seen so much inconsistency in general chemistry textbooks, I’m curious…would you classify noble gases (excluding He) as having 8 valence electrons or 0 valence electrons?
92%8 valence electrons
8%0 valence electrons

I’m thrilled to now be an Assistant Teaching Professor in Chemistry at @NCStateChem! Today was a fabulous first day of class! Looking forward to many more! #GoPack
Thank you to everyone who helped me get to this point! (@CofCChem @uncchemistry @LeibfarthGroup @Frank_Leibfarth @p_bipp and many more) I’m living the absolute dream, teaching chemistry for a living!

My new review paper has been published! This was a long quarantine effort and I'm very happy it's finally out there. If you want to learn more about the properties that affect degradative plasmid transfer, check it out:

Shout out to my laptop for holding on by a thread and waiting until after my thesis defense (even if only by ~5 days) to decide to completely crash and burn
Still can’t believe that on Thursday of last week, I successfully defended my thesis and became Dr. Travis Varner! A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way! #PhDone
I am so so so so proud of everything Paige has done and accomplished! She is a rockstar chemist, and it has been an amazing experience to work with her these past two years! Can’t wait to see all the great things she will continue to do!
Anybody else feel like they’re on their own little personal episode of @NailedIt whenever comparing a crisp literature NMR spectrum of the pure product to whatever mess they happened to make?

I can safely tweet this now. I drew this fun one for a friend to gift to someone. A majestic chemistry greyhound. #chemtwitter
Really enjoyed hearing @AnneJMcNeil present some of her group’s work focused in sustainable polymer chemistry last week at UNC. Can’t wait to keep reading more about their perspective on this important problem.

Congrats! I had the pleasure of mentoring Yaman when he was an undergraduate at UNC. His enthusiasm for just about everything is rarely matched. He’s somewhat new to #ChemTwitter so be sure to give him a follow!

Do you like asymmetric catalysis? Phys org? Computational chem? Structure-reactivity and structure-property relationships? Match-mismatch effects? All as it relates to polymer synthesis? Then check out my FIRST FIRST AUTHOR PAPER! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac…
It was wonderful to be able to work alongside so many great people on this project! @AaronTeator @Paige_Jacky @YernaiduR @VPRCramer @Frank_Leibfarth @LeibfarthGroup
So it’s just all downhill from here, huh? 😅

Thanks for hosting me and Caroline to present on our work! It was an awesome time!
Thanks to @CofCalumni Travis Varner and Caroline Gilmer for joining our senior seminar today! Travis is a 5th year PhD student at UNC-Chapel Hill and Caroline is a brewer and QC manager at Platt Park Brewery in Denver, CO. @CofCSSM

Starting Mon (Aug 3), OM Bootcamp @scrippsresearch is going virtual! This year we are opening it up to undergrads (esp those at PUIs!) who may have missed out on summer research. DM for details if you’d like to take part.

Friendly reminder that when they said credentials for accessible parking, they mean a $500 annual permit not actually being disabled (even if that disability has been previously registered with the parking office)
A thread.

Mad Gab: Chemistry Edition
Tuesday at 11AM EST, register to hear my good friend Marcus talk about his use of flow chemistry to tackle important problems in polymer science!
Thank you to both our speakers @pratik_gurnani and @LiarouE for a brilliant start to our series, and thanks to all those who attended! Up next we have Marcus Reis from UNC Chapel Hill and Dr Fabian Pooch from Helsinki! Make sure to join on the 21st for some more great talks!
