“Anesthesiologist” Means “Physician”
AANA is changing its organization’s name to the American Association of Nurse “Anesthesiology,” which falsely suggests that nurses are medical doctors and leaders of the science and study of anesthesiology. @ASALifeline

Friendly reminder nurses: Don't insert feeding tubes on patients who recently had surgery in their nose or who have basal skull fractures because this can happen.

That commentary usually comes from the peanut gallery who has never taken the pre-med curriculum, completed med school and residency and then practiced as a physician who utilizes segments of those courses into his/her practice. We know. They do not.

The moment someone advocating for the reform of medical education starts talking about how “useless” organic chemistry, biochemistry, or histology are, I stop listening.

Every single doctor in my ED is vaccinated, and pro-vaccination. Maybe half the nursing/tech staff is vaccinated and many are anti-vaccination. Why is there such a disparity, and is anyone else having similar experiences? #MedTwitter

Patients, ask for an ANESTHESIOLOGIST, a physician for your anesthesia care. #WhenSecondsMatter #ASA
Dear patients and colleagues, please ask your anesthesiologists where they went to med school and did residency. AANA is trying to fool you.

There are hundreds of stories like this.
No NP will consent to being in a study the goal of which isn't to extol their profession. All the studies showing equivalency are HIGHLY flawed. We need leaders of OUR organizations to support US. – at North Dakota, USA

Anesthesiologist = PHYSICIAN (MD/DO=4y) + 4y residency +/- 1-3y fellowship = 8-11y post-college. Nurse anesthetist = RN with a couple of extra years of school (can be online!) = 2-3 post-college. SO, 8-11y vs 2-3y = NOT equivalent! Who do YOU choose for YOU? Demand a DOCTOR!!
🔥Move by AANA to rebrand itself will further confuse patients.
Patients deserve clarity on who is providing their care.
Surveys show patients want physician-led healthcare teams.
Who will lead your care when you’re under anesthesia? Ask for a PHYSICIAN.

I have some pretty nasty anonomyous CRNA accounts trolling me these days.
If you don't think I'm an authority on anesthesiology, that's fine. You don't have to follow me. You can also feel free to ignore my research articles, book chapters, and lectures on this topic.

Standing FIRMLY and OPENLY behind this message.
Let’s be honest and clear in our duty to patients. In the same way physicians cannot change his/her title to be something they are not, our nurse colleagues cannot either.
Let’s work together in our respective roles.
First it was "doctor" CRNA with a DNP that some get 100% online.
Now AANA changes its name to "Anesthesiology." Enough is enough.
AANA, stop trying to be something you're not and deliberately cause controversy. Focus on #COVID19 like the rest of us. Patients over politics.

What is in a name? Not the education or experience of a doctor! Patients have a right to know who’s taking of them, a nurse or a doctor!
