This is simply wrong. More renewables obviously makes electricity more expensive and increases reliance on gas, which is required for when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine. We need more domestic gas production and to get started on nuclear big time.
Jackdaw is the wrong decision. More oil and gas will not bring down bills or give us real energy security. We should be moving faster on renewables, cutting our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and creating good jobs in clean energy. 1/2

My report makes six key recommendations: Fix the broken understanding of how the gas market works. Policymakers should recognise that British gas production is not sold on global markets at a global price. The GB gas market uses marginal pricing and additional domestic production displaces more expensive LNG imports, thereby reducing British gas prices. The report argues that claims that additional UK production cannot affect domestic prices are simply wrong. Increase UK Continental Shelf gas production. Domestic gas should be preferred to imports wherever possible. UKCS gas is both cheaper and cleaner than imported LNG and provides a secure source of supply directly connected to the British gas network. Reduce reliance on electricity imports. Britain is increasingly depending on electricity imports during periods of low domestic renewable generation. However, highly correlated weather patterns mean low wind generation in Britain can coincide with shortages elsewhere. The report warns that Norway and France cannot be assumed to provide unlimited electricity to their neighbours during periods of stress. Model gas and electricity security together. The gas grid transports far more energy than the electricity network. Electrifying heating will take decades while gas-fired generation will remain critical to electricity security for years to come. The report argues that planning should recognise the interdependencies of gas and electricity to a greater extent. Focus on cheap energy. Rapidly rising network costs are overtaking fuel costs as the main driver of energy bills. The report calls for tighter control of network expenditure and for the suspension of the Connect & Manage regime, arguing that consumers should not be required to fund expensive infrastructure whose output is frequently constrained or wasted. Treat energy security as national security. The government should subject energy policy to an explicit national-security test, prioritising resilience, diversity of supply, sufficient domestic energy capacity and the preservation of strategically important industrial capability alongside affordability and sustainability. watt-logic.com/wp-content/up…

For thirteen summers an American walked unarmed among the grizzlies of the Alaskan coast, gave them names, told the cameras they were his friends, and in October 2003 a bear ate him and his girlfriend while the camera recorded the sound. Timothy Treadwell had been a failed actor and a drunk in California. The bears, he said, saved him. Every summer from 1990 he flew into Katmai National Park, pitched a tent in the middle of the richest bear ground in the world, and lived among them with a video camera and no gun, no fence, no bear spray. He touched them. He swam with them. He sang to them. He told schoolchildren that bears were misunderstood and that fear of them was a fiction, and he became famous for it, with a book and the chat shows and a foundation. The park rangers warned him every year. The native people of the region said what they had always said: that a bear is a bear, that their grandfathers kept their distance and kept their rifles, and that a man who forgets what he is looking at has already lost the argument. In 2003 he stayed late into October, past the time the fat summer bears move off and the hungry old ones arrive before the snow. A twenty-eight-year-old male with worn teeth came into the camp. The camera lens cap was on. The six-minute audio exists and nobody who has heard it describes it. The rangers shot the bear and found the two of them inside it. He had spent thirteen years telling the world that the wild was gentle if you loved it enough. The wild had been listening politely the whole time.

The UK speech regulator's chief executive, Dame Melanie Dawes, told MPs this week that the regulator won’t be able to recover every Online Safety Act fine. Nine of the eleven fines it has issued remain unpaid. 4chan was fined £520,000 plus £800 a day, and its lawyer replied with a picture of an AI-generated hamster. When Ofcom wrote again, he sent another hamster. In July, Ofcom closed a case against an American forum it had fined £950,000 because it had run out of legal routes. Then it asked the government for more powers. In the same hearing, Dawes said the UK’s under-16 social media ban will be “much more draconian” for Meta than its US settlement. Those were her words. The only way to keep under-16s off a platform is to check the age of every adult on it. reclaimthenet.org/ofcom-stru…

Courts make wrong decisions all the time. Experts can be wrong. That's why you have to look at the evidence he submitted yourself. They're all irrefutably forgeries.

Boris Johnson should NEVER be forgiven for what he did to our country. Lockdown. The Boriswave. Net Zero. Vaccine passports. DEI. Record tax. Absolutely shameful. Unforgivable.

I was recently in a pub near Galway and noticed this on the wall. Between 1900 and 1993, the price of the same pint of Guinness increased 136x. Measured in Guinness, money lost over 99% of its purchasing power. Sometimes the best lessons about money are hanging on pub walls.

He doesn't deserve any publicity but I couldn't resist that one. It appears he's trying to recast himself as some kind of expert on AI now, among other things. All lies, of course. It's all just obvious AI-generated cerebral narcissistic ramblings.

"Only high-testosterone, high-IQ heterosexual males speak and act as a result of their mental model of the system as a whole. Everyone else just says and does whatever they think will keep them safe, and maybe get them a pat on the head." These are the types of absolutist statements commonly written by people reliant on audience capture for a given trend. It's not the type of thing that someone sophiscated enough to write Theft of Fire would likely write. If anything, it comes off as emotional and defensive. A classic but tragic trend is to start with reasonable/broad statements and then shift toward more absolutist/narrow statements over time, which happens either because 1) someone is trying to corral people (a demagogue) or 2) because someone needs the money (which shouldn't inform their art, but does, which is an age-old issue with artists). I'm looking forward to your next book and would encourage resistance against such banal and well-telegraphed failure modes that this type of direction tends to lead toward.

No, she does not realize anything. No, she will not realize anything. No, she will not change her belief system. Because she has none. Only high-testosterone, high-IQ heterosexual males speak and act as a result of their mental model of the system as a whole. Everyone else just says and does whatever they think will keep them safe, and maybe get them a pat on the head. Her mental model is not "Diversity is good for France." Her mental model is "if I say diversity is good for France, others will approve of me". If you have enough voters who believe things simply because others believe them, democracy becomes irrelevant. Actual opinion no longer matters, only the illusion of consensus. Because the people who are swayed by the illusion of consensus become the swing voters, and everyone who actually needs to be reasoned with becomes irrelevant. That's what women's suffrage is really for. That's what immigration is really for. That's what government school systems are for. They are all for generating a critical mass of voters whose opinions are formed outside their heads. That's why the entire Western political class appears to hate high-T hetero White men suddenly and all at once. Western high-T hetero White men are the demographic that advances civilization at all, but they are also the greatest impediment to managerial rule. And guess which one the political class actually cares about. So, no, women are not going to suddenly wake up and reverse course. You are not going to seize power by changing women's minds. You must change women's minds by seizing power.

I had an amusing conversation over dinner on Friday with a Portuguese and a German patent attorney, who were amused to learn that we had a word in English for throwing someone out of a window. Surely nobody would actually use that, they said. I provided an example.

I think I have the ultimate solution to the French riots, as well as those seen across other Western European countries. Gather all of the rioters, ship them off to the Donbas border, and force them to fight against the Russian troops. They can riot to their heart’s content and maybe learn something about real life. It’s really a win-win for everyone. It’s a brilliant way to cut through the theater. The same students and activists who treat broken windows, burning cars, and injured police as noble resistance would suddenly face a border where the other side isn’t under orders to hold back, where the shells are real, and where the “system” they are fighting isn’t a French prefecture but an army that has already leveled cities. The climate banners and keffiyehs won’t stop artillery. Europe’s political class has spent years treating the Russia-Ukraine war as a distant moral test while allowing large-scale street violence at home to be framed as “youth expression.” Shipping the protesters to the actual front line would force the two realities to collide. The ones who genuinely believe they’re fighting oppression would learn what sustained fire actually looks like. The ones who are only there just for the spectacle and the cameras would soon learn that the cameras stop mattering once the drones arrive. Either outcome removes them from the streets of Paris, Lyon, Milan or Amsterdam, which is the practical gain for everyone still trying to live there.

Thomas Sowell explains why fascism and Nazism are left-wing ideologies: “Back in the 1920s, however, when fascism was a new political development, it was widely—and correctly—regarded as being on the political left.” “Jonah Goldberg’s great book ‘Liberal Fascism’ cites overwhelming evidence of the fascists’ consistent pursuit of the goals of the left, and of the left’s embrace of the fascists as one of their own during the 1920s.” “Mussolini, the originator of fascism, was lionized by the left, both in Europe and in America, during the 1920s. Even Hitler, who adopted fascist ideas in the 1920s, was seen by some, including W.E.B. Du Bois, as a man of the left.” “It was in the 1930s, when ugly internal and international actions by Hitler and Mussolini repelled the world, that the left distanced themselves from fascism and its Nazi offshoot—and verbally transferred these totalitarian dictatorships to the right, saddling their opponents with these pariahs.” “What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people—like themselves—need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.” Source: “Socialist or Fascist?” (2012)

Rome collapsed because Romans stopped enforcing the conditions that made Roman citizenship worth anything. The same is happening to France right now. The Western Empire's third- and fourth-century emperors, desperate for tax revenue and military manpower, settled entire Gothic and Frankish tribal confederacies inside the limes without demanding assimilation, military oaths, or any meaningful integration into Roman economic life. In 382 AD, Theodosius I settled roughly 100,000 Visigoths in the Balkans under their own chieftains, exempt from Roman law. They owed Rome nothing, and they acted accordingly. By 410, Rome fell. The Austro-Hungarian Empire ran a version of the same experiment. Vienna absorbed millions of Slavic, Magyar, and Romanian subjects into a single fiscal and administrative unit without establishing coherent property rights or common rule of law across ethnicities. Capital fled the peripheral regions because contract enforcement varied by ethnicity and political connection. The empire spent itself policing internal tensions rather than producing anything. Open borders can work when you couple them with private property, enforceable contracts, and zero access to a welfare state. Every historical collapse involved governments absorbing populations onto public land, public payroll, or public grain dole. Welfare states and open borders function as a single detonator, not two separate policies.
