This shift away from lazy and racist caricatures to passionate and compassionate community voices is a great opportunity for Indigenous peoples to make ourselves heard on our own terms.
The last few years have seen an incredible rise in Indigenous storytelling shared by major media outlets. From Reservation Dogs and Prey to War Pony and Dark Winds, Indigenous people are beginning to lead in the telling of our own stories.
For these reasons and more, we have been one of the most studied and most stereotyped Indigenous nations, often being caricatured in westerns, haunting the settler state.
to our leadership in the American Indian Movement occupations of Alcatraz and Wounded Knee, to today, as we work to rebuild a world for our children where they are safe and loved and know who they are as Lakota.
As Lakota, we carry forward a proud history of anti- and decolonial action, from the earliest days of conquest, when we were undefeated in battle against the US Cavalry,
For allies, especially those working in media, we have an array of speakers and workshops about our community and the best ways to center our voices and join together for narrative shift!
For our youth we are proud to work with Outlast to offer workshops for media production, iPhonography, animation and comic writing! As Lakota, we know we have a lot to learn from our youth, and we look forward to seeing what you can make!
For Indigenous community members we will offer knowledge about traditional storytelling and contemporary media, covering the award-winning movie War Pony and topics like 8th Generation Warriorism and the changing face of media

Wíŋyaŋ tȟa aŋpétu kiŋ čha philáuŋyaŋpi. (It is woman's day, so we are thankful for them.)
Happy International Women's Day from TVCDC. As Lakota people, we're a matriarchal society. Our women are givers of life & sacred! They keep families together & spirits strong in many ways.

One of our guests this week is Heather Dawn Thompson (Cheyenne River), who currently serves as the Director of the Office of Tribal Relations for the USDA in the President Biden Administration. We asked her what advice she would give to young Lakota children and young adults.
As Lakota's, we know that our language is sacred! The government tried to steal it from our ancestors, use it for their wars, and then sell it back through expensive university courses. At Thunder Valley CDC, we work diligently to make sure every home has fluent Lakota Speakers.
