Women and marginalised genders in the political sphere often face added online abuse. Uli will be working on a slur list specifically on this!

Who gets to decide what is #GenderedAbuse? For Uli, we try to ensure it is those at the receiving end of it!

"In Tamil, there are so many slurs that change even from one city to another. You don’t see that so much in English. It is broader."
This reflection by an Uli annotator conveys the challenge of combating #OGBV. #ParticipatoryML
How we design #ML tools matters as much as what we design. Uli – a tool to track, archive and redact slurs and problematic content – was created in a participatory manner.

Some exciting updates from this sprint:

We added a new feature to Uli so that you can add a slur to the custom slur list by right clicking on a selected text. This feature should be available to anyone who has Uli installed.
To clarify the new owner’s doubts: posting on the platform is work. Harassment on the platform is the occupational hazard people of marginalized genders face in building/maintaining their profiles on this platform.
Twitter is used by communities around the world to organise and mobilise. And for now at least, people are staying. This platform is, after all, built on their labor too.

A seemingly benign ‘good morning’ message, can be repeated day after day, to remind someone of a threat that is always around. Far from being ‘free’, people have to consider every word carefully, and sometimes not express for the fear of that threat being actualized. #16Days
Nov 25th marked the beginning of the #16days campaign to end violence against women. We'll use it to talk about the ghost of online gender-based violence that haunts social media platforms. How does one respond to it, and the resilience of those who inhabit these spaces.
We can try to make these two goals complementary and not competing ones: build tools, but also build partnerships and solidarity to advocate for expansion of what platforms consider abusive. More importantly, advocate for radical re-imagining of the digital spheres we meet in.
In the next few days we'll continue to analyze online #GBV using Twitter 2.0 as a fulcrum that has to balance issues of ownership, labor, freedom and connection on social media.
Did You Know?
#GenderedDisinformation is #OnlineGBV that affects women + queer persons — it uses false or misleading gender & sex-based narratives and aims to discredit + harass them.
Here's why it's important 👇🏾
