CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN HOW THIS IS ACTUALLY LEGAL. I just read how a health FSA works and I can’t believe it. For 2026 the IRS lets workers set aside up to $3,400 of their pay before it ever hits their bank account (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Don’t spend all of it by the deadline? The most a plan can let you carry over is $680, and carryover is optional for the employer. $3,400 minus $680 is $2,720. Whatever is left past that is forfeited under the “use it or lose it” rule. So a worker can put in $3,400, spend nothing, and walk away with $680 at best. Yes, it’s pre-tax. That still doesn’t bring back $2,720. A savings account does not take your own money back because you missed a deadline.

I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE STOCKING SHELVES, I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE DRIVING A TRUCK, I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE ANSWERING PHONES... IF YOU GIVE AN EMPLOYER YOUR FULL WEEK YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO STAY HOME SICK WITHOUT LOSING A PAYCHECK. You’re a human being, not a machine that only gets repaired on your day off. Personally I don’t even know why this has to be a debate...it just shows how little thought people give to the person doing the work.

Something about prescription costs really bothers me. According to KFF's March 2026 Health Tracking Poll, 27% of adults said they hadn't filled a prescription because of the cost in the past year. Another 19% said they'd cut pills in half or skipped doses. Overall, 43% reported at least one cost-related measure that meant they weren't taking medication as prescribed. I understand that medicines cost money to develop and distribute. But the entire point of getting a prescription is that someone needs the treatment. A medicine that someone cannot afford is a treatment they may never actually receive. An essential prescription drugs SHOULD have a strict out-of-pocket price cap.

I drove through the city bypass yesterday afternoon. The overhead gantries listed an $8.00 toll for a five-mile stretch. That works out to $1.60 per mile. A regular gallon of gas costs around $3.10. My car gets 28 miles per gallon, which means one gallon drives me almost six times farther than that whole toll zone. So driving on five miles of public highway costs double the price of the actual fuel burned to cover the distance. Are toll lanes managing traffic, or are they selling public pavement back to the highest bidder?

I don't think we talk enough about how expensive it is just to get to work. Average household transportation spending reached $13,318 in 2024. That's about $1,110 a month. Transportation accounted for 17% of average household spending. And that average includes households with very different incomes and commuting needs. If you need a car to earn a paycheck, transportation isn't some optional lifestyle upgrade. It's part of the cost of keeping your job. You can have a job and still struggle to afford the cost of showing up. Employers should help cover commuting costs for lower-paid workers, period.

My girlfriend's doctor sent her to the imaging center for an MRI. The bill came back: $2,400. Insurance called it out of network. We called. The rep said the doctor and the facility are separate legal entities, so network status doesn’t carry over. I asked what we’re supposed to do next time. Their answer: ask every provider, at the appointment, before the scan, whether they’re in network. Same building. Different network. The doctor who ordered the scan isn’t required to tell you it’s out of network. Should they have to? You definitely should.

Is delivery worth 40% extra? A delivery order WITH a $20 menu price. Fees add $8. Now it’s $28, which is 40% more than the menu. Order that 20 times a month and it’s $160 in fees. $1,920 a year. Delivery turns a $20 meal into a $28 meal before anyone is hungry.

Child care averages $13,184 a year. Child Care Aware of America 2025 figure. That’s about $1,099 a month. Median household income is $87,460. Census. CHILD CARE ALONE IS ROUGHLY 15% OF MEDIAN INCOME. HHS has called 7% of income the affordable benchmark for years. Most families I know are well above that. Is the 7% childcare affordability benchmark something you still hear discussed?

Can someone explain why people still think renting is automatically burning money? Take a $1,000,000 house owned free and clear. Keep the house. Pay $15,000 a year in property taxes, $4,000 in insurance, and $5,000 in maintenance. That is $24,000 leaving your pocket every year just to keep the lights on. Or Sell the house. Put $1,000,000 in Treasuries at 5%. Draw $50,000 a year in interest. Use $4,000 a month to rent a place. Your rent is 100% paid for by interest, and your $1,000,000 principal never shrinks by a single dollar. One option drains $24,000 in unrecoverable costs every year. The other generates enough cash flow to live for free. Why are we still pretending homeownership is the only way to build wealth?

My coworker ran the numbers on going back to work full-time after maternity leave. Childcare quote came back at $1,140 a month around the national average ($13,184 a year per Child Care Aware). She makes $42k. After taxes and health insurance, her take-home is roughly $2,650. Childcare alone eats 43% of her take-home before rent, groceries, gas, or anything else. She informed HR of her interest in part-time work, they countered that she would lose benefits. But she's already LOSING most of her paycheck. A lot of parents aren’t CHOOSING to stay home. They’re looking at the math and realizing the job is mostly a pass-through for the daycare center.

I renewed my car registration online. The fee was $87. Then the site added a $12 “convenience fee” for paying by card. I switched to the bank account option. It still charged $9. I called and asked why there’s a fee to pay a fee the state already requires. The person said the payment processor is a private company and the fee covers their cost of handling the transaction. I asked if there’s a way to pay with no fee. “You can mail a check. It takes 4–6 weeks and you risk driving with an expired registration if it doesn’t process in time.” The state requires the registration. The only practical way to pay it includes an extra charge that doesn’t go to the state.

Overdraft fees might be the strangest math in banking. Say you buy a $5 coffee with $3 in your account. The bank covers the missing $2. Then charges $30 or more, which is the fee the CFPB has cited as typical. A $30 fee on a $2 shortfall is a penalty with a friendly name. Why do banks do this? Should a bank be allowed to charge more than the amount it covered? Yes or no.

I drove past the apartment complex I lived in when I was 22. Same parking lot. The sign out front now says “luxury studios starting at $1,550.” I paid $875 and thought that was steep because I had to park on the street half the time. The complex didn't improve.. the street just became more expensive.

It kinda of weird how everyone I know lost the last of their whimsy at work around since 2024. Not “stressed.” I mean the complete disappearance of any lightness. No jokes. No goofing around. Nothing. You try to make the eight hours slightly less dead and people look at you like you’re unhinged for even suggesting it. You’re trapped there either way. The idea that you might as well make it bearable apparently died around the same time the economy started feeling like it could collapse on any given Tuesday. Everyone’s in pure survival mode now - emotionless, checked out, terrified that one wrong move puts them back in the void of unemployment. It’s not just the jobs you’ve had. The constant precarity killed the last of the joie de vivre. Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just the general state of everything? The economy?

Spoke with my aunt called last week - she wasn't having it anymore. her daughter graduated top of her class. 3.9 GPA. four APs. got into her dream state school. the aid package showed up. $32,000 a year for tuition, books, and housing. they gave her a $2,500 'merit achievement grant.' twelve years of straight A’s and clubs. they told her that was the path. family is still looking at roughly $118,000 out of pocket for four years. that’s what higher education financing looks like when you’re middle class and don’t qualify for need-based aid. they call it an investment. i call it a six-figure toll booth in front of basic upward mobility. when did a bachelor’s degree turn into a luxury financial asset?

Every ISP call, basically: You: “Hi, my internet bill went from $55 to $104. Is that a mistake?” Rep: “Not a mistake. Your 12-month promotional rate ended this month.” You: “Nobody told me that. I signed up for $55 a month.” Rep: “It’s in the terms you accepted at sign-up. Your new rate is $89 for service plus a $15 equipment fee.” You: “That’s $49 more every month. $588 a year, for the exact same speed, on the same router.” Rep: “I completely understand your frustration. The $55 was never your price. It was an introductory offer.” You: “Then can I get another promotion? I’ve been a customer for a year.” Rep: “Those are reserved for new customers. If you’d like, I can cancel your service and you can sign up again as one.” You: “So the only way to keep the price is to leave and come back.” Rep: “That’s one option. Is there anything else I can help you with today?” Loyalty used to get you a discount. Now it gets you the full price.
