LLMs generate code incredibly fast, but to ensure they generate exactly what is intended, they need clear boundaries. @unmeshjoshi shares his experience using abstractions and Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) to provide a strong harness.

You don’t need 10 books to understand how distributed systems works! You just need thisss…
Patterns of Distributed Systems by @unmeshjoshi - is so far the best book I’ve read. It has very nice visual sequence diagrams to explain every concept. Every concept start with a problem statement it’s trying to solve. It helps you build the MindMap why something came and how everything together builds a reliable, scalable distributed system.

I missed this brilliant piece from @unmeshjoshi on the nature of coding and the power of abstractions and vocabulary in the LLM age. martinfowler.com/articles/wh…

Some of the most loved workshops came from practitioners like:
• @unmeshjoshi on databases & distributed systems
• @sidbing on reinforcement learning
• @sanand0 on DataViz, vibe coding & mining digital exhaust
• @kiran_kulkarni & Utkarsh on running AI agents in production

Will there be source code in the future? To wrestle with this, we have to understand what code is. Unmesh Joshi sees code as having two distinct but intertwined purposes: instructions to a machine and a conceptual model of the problem domain.

Build a concurrent cache - a 14-stage deep dive: HashMap → sharded, TTL-aware, metrics-heavy cache
Covers Mutex, RwLock, Arc, atomics, MESI by Sarthak Makhija. (Thanks to @unmeshjoshi for the scout!)

Why do LLMs struggle to build complex architecture?
@unmeshjoshi, Distinguished Engineer at @thoughtworks, joins Will Wilson and David Wynn to talk about sharing abstractions with the machine, deterministic simulation testing not as a testing tool but a teaching tool, and why a talk given in 1998 holds the secret to successfully collaborating with modern AI tools.

Wonderful day attending the workshop hosted by @rootconf and conducted by @unmeshjoshi! Thank you Unmesh for the wonderful workshop and the code/tests. TDD done brilliantly! And thank you RootConf and @zainabbawa for organizing and the volunteers at Thoughtworks!
On March 28, I’m hosting a hands-on workshop with Rootconf focused on the internals of distributed databases.
It will be useful to anyone who want to understand the architectural patterns used in systems like Google Spanner, YugabyteDB, or CockroachDB. has.gy/C6hD

A workshop on Building a Distributed Transactional Database.
We will deep dive into versioned storage with timestamp and it's implications on consistency + transaction isolation implementation details in modern distributed DBs.

After a wonderful workshop on failures and outages with @rootconf in Nov, @unmeshjoshi is back with yet another hands-on workshop on "Building a distributed transactional database", this time on home turf in Pune on 28 March!

I had a conversation with @unmeshjoshi , and Rebecca Parsons where we talked about the feedback loop between the "what" and "how" in software development, and the role LLMs play in it.

I enjoyed all the discussions.. even when I was almost exhausted after a 5 hour workshop. Wonderful group of participants with so many interesting discussions.
Had so much fun at the meet-up on fundamentals of data managemen at scale with @unmeshjoshi @BengaluruSys last week.
Thank you to our volunteer - Gurupratap - for making memorable pics.

Good to see the book on Amazon India Bestsellers list in the Software Architecture category.

After much flight outages and airline failures, @unmeshjoshi is en route to Bengaluru.
On the plus side, even though Indigo airlines cancelled all flights today, we opened up just a few more seats for Saturday's workshop - has.gy/rBaF
Looking forward to this meetup
Back with another November meetup 🎉
We’re teaming up with @BengaluruSys to host @unmeshjoshi - author of Patterns of Distributed Systems.
Expect sharding, replication, partitioning, CAP, leases & OSS design patterns - in an interactive, ask-as-you-go session.

@unmeshjoshi finds LLMs to be a useful tool, but explains why their help becomes illusory if they shortcut the essential learning loop of our professional practice.

Debugging distributed system failures is tricky. Deterministic simulation + Jepsen makes it tractable. With TickLoom, build your own algorithms, inject partitions/loss/crashes, and prove properties from histories.
