Attended IMA MEDICON 2026, the 92nd IMA Karnataka State Annual Medical Conference, in Shivamogga and joined the medical fraternity in celebrating its invaluable service to society.
Doctors do more than treat illnesses. They restore hope, ease suffering and stand beside patients and families during their most difficult moments. Their dedication and expertise are vital to a healthier society.
As I emphasised, a stronger healthcare system can be built only through mutual trust and close collaboration between the government and the medical fraternity. Doctors must be heard, their concerns addressed, and their expertise recognised in shaping policies and improving healthcare services.
My heartfelt appreciation to the Indian Medical Association, doctors and medical students for their commitment to the service of humanity.

The distress of over 600 Karnataka Umrah pilgrims stranded in Makkah and Madina, away from their families and facing uncertainty over their return, is deeply concerning.
I have written to Hon’ble External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar , urging his immediate intervention to facilitate their safe and early return, including special flights wherever necessary, and to ensure that they receive adequate food, accommodation and assistance in the meantime.
Our pilgrims and their families should not have to face this hardship alone. The Government of Karnataka stands ready to work with the Union Government and all concerned authorities to bring them home safely.
The Government of Karnataka has acted swiftly to assist Umrah pilgrims from our State who are stranded in Makkah and Madina following the suspension of flight services in Saudi Arabia.
In view of the prevailing situation in the Middle East, Akasa Air, IndiGo, Flynas and Air India Express have suspended their flights from Jeddah and Riyadh to Bengaluru and other parts of India. Consequently, more than 600 pilgrims from Karnataka who had travelled for Umrah are facing considerable difficulties.
Immediately upon learning of the situation, a team comprising the Chairman, Executive Officer and members of the Karnataka State Haj Committee was deputed to Makkah and Madina. The team has personally met the pilgrims and reviewed the conditions on the ground.
A meeting was also held with Indian community voluntary organisations in Makkah and Madina. With their cooperation, arrangements have been made to provide the pilgrims with free food, medicines and accommodation.
I have written to the Hon'ble Chief Minister requesting that necessary directions be issued to the concerned authorities to arrange special flights for the safe return of our pilgrims. Through the Chief Minister Shri @DKShivakumar , the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has also been urged to restore flight operations at the earliest.
Airlines that take passengers abroad on advance-booked tickets bear the responsibility of ensuring their safe return. The concerned airlines have been formally reminded of this responsibility in writing. Consultations are also underway with legal experts regarding the filing of a Public Interest Litigation in the Hon'ble Supreme Court, through the Haj Committee, against the airlines that have failed to discharge this responsibility. A decision in this regard will be taken shortly.
Pilgrims and their families may contact the Karnataka State Haj Committee for information and assistance at:

The safety and well-being of our pilgrims remain our foremost priority. There is no cause for concern. The Government of Karnataka stands firmly with them and their families.
Held a meeting with the Private Hospitals Association at Arogya Soudha today to address rising medical expenses and strengthen patient protection.
Public interest and patient welfare remain our top priorities. No patient or family should face financial exploitation during a medical emergency.
Following discussion took place
🔹 Dignity of patients: No hospital should withhold a patient's body over unpaid bills. A clear policy will be formulated to address this issue from our @DHFWKA
🔹 Affordable life-saving medicines: Measures to reduce the cost of essential medicines for cancer, cardiac and kidney care and curb unauthorised MRP hikes were discussed. Further we will have a meeting with pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors soon.
🔹 Fair insurance practices: A separate meeting with insurance companies will be convened to address excessive billing for insured patients and simplify the claims process.
🔹 Resolving regulatory issues: Representations from private hospitals concerning the Fire Department, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and KPME Act were received. Appropriate steps will be taken to address these concerns.
Further decisions on excessive billing by private hospitals will be taken after consultations with Health departmental officials. The Government is committed to establishing a transparent and accountable system that safeguards patients’ interests, prevents exploitation and ensures that the public is not misled or unfairly charged
Our commitment is clear to ensure a transparent and accountable healthcare system that protects patients, prevents exploitation and makes quality healthcare more affordable and accessible to all.

VIDEO | Bengaluru: Karnataka Health Minister UT Khader says, "The Karnataka Government and the Health Department have decided, and we had a meeting with the private hospital management association people as well. One point is regarding the prices they have to display in front of the hospitals. So we have discussed it with them, and they have agreed. All the price lists of the procedures and treatments should be published... Other than that, for all the procedures, whatever the prices are, they should make a book or register and keep it at the counter. So whoever wants, patients or patients' attendants, can go and see the rate first, before anything, what the procedure rate is. This will be implemented as soon as possible."

I welcome the decision of NPPA to rationalise trade margins on 137 anti-cancer drugs, capping them at 30% of MRP. This decision follows the Hon'ble Supreme Court's directions and the investigation reports and letters sent by Karnataka's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Department of Health & Family Welfare, through its Drugs Control Division, to the Union Government and NPPA on 23.9.2026. Prices of several life-saving cancer medicines are expected to fall by up to 70% from November 9, 2026 which will largely benefit for the patients undergoing cancer treatment
Karnataka was among the first states to act on this issue. Following complaints from patients, the Drugs Control Division carried out a statewide inquiry and found huge gaps between the landing cost and MRP of 253 cancer medicines. On the direction of Hon'ble Chief Minister @DKShivakumar, we placed this data before the Centre and pressed for national action. It is deeply satisfying that our work has now brought relief to cancer patients across India.
Karnataka will not stop here. We have sought similar price controls on medicines for heart and kidney diseases and other critical illnesses. Our inspections of hospitals and pharmacies will ensure every patient gets the reduced price from day one.
If any patient is still being charged higher prices after November 9, please reach out to our @DHFWKA .
Every family facing cancer is already fighting the hardest battle of their lives. They should not have to fight the cost of medicines as well. We will stand with them in this fight, every step of the way.
I welcome the Hon'ble Supreme Court's strong observations and directions on the exorbitant pricing of life saving drugs for diseases like cancer. Excessive prices and wide price variations in life saving medicines are unacceptable under any circumstances.
When I received complaints that essential cancer medicines were being sold at inflated prices. I directed the Drugs Control Division of the Department of Health & Family Welfare to investigate. Our statewide inquiry found a huge gap between the landing cost and the MRP of 253 cancer medicines. Medicines costing only a few hundred rupees were being sold with trade margins of 15% to 52%, and sometimes higher.
On the direction of Hon'ble Chief Minister @DKShivakumar , we wrote to the Union Government with detailed cost and price data and urged urgent national action.
Now, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has capped trade margins on cancer medicines at 30%. Prices of several drugs will fall by 20–70%, saving patients across the country nearly ₹2,500 crore every year. This is a historic day for Karnataka and our Health & Family welfare Department as we had brought to notice to Union Government & NPPA and had written letter's regarding this inflated price raise issue.
Next steps in Karnataka from public healthcare.
🔹 From November 1, 2026 Hospitals and pharmacies must show both the landing cost and the MRP on every patient bill.
🔹 We will closely examine the cost of medicines and treatment for Heart and Kidney diseases. Wherever patients are found to be exploited, we will investigate and take strict action on the same lines.
🔹 Inspections of hospitals and medical shops will continue to ensure compliance with the new price limits. Any violation will face strict legal action without exception.
Cancer patients must not be forced to fight both the disease and the burden of unaffordable medicines. Our government will not tolerate anyone who profits by exploiting patients.
I congratulate the @DHFWKA Principal Secretary, the Commissioner of Food Safety & Drug Administration and the entire team whose investigation brought this issue to light. I also thank our friends from media for raising public awareness.
Held a meeting today with the Karnataka State Mental Health Authority (KSMHA) and NIMHANS experts on implementing the Karnataka Mental Healthcare Regulations, 2026. I have directed officials to ensure that every mental health facility in the state meets these standards in full.
Across all five categories, from standalone mental health establishments, medical college psychiatry departments and hospital psychiatric wards to de-addiction and rehabilitation centres, the following are now mandatory: one psychiatrist per 30 patients, nurses on every shift, psychologists or social workers, hygiene norms, disabled-friendly premises and emergency ambulance access.
Every facility must prominently display its registration number, services and the Authority's contact details. When it comes to the safety and dignity of people seeking mental health care, there will be no compromise.
